Urban Forestry Technician

Job Summary

This position is an entry-level position responsible for clearing rights-of-way under the direction of the ROW/Urban Forestry Crew Leader. The primary responsibilities include trimming and maintaining all trees in the rights-of-way utilizing chainsaws, pole saws, hedgers, loaders, a limb truck, and dingo. Reports to the Street Dept ROW/Maintenance Supervisor.

• Operates a chainsaw, pole saw, hedger, loader, limb truck, and dingo to clear and maintain rights-of-way by trimming and maintaining all trees.
• Maintains all equipment and keeps it in ready condition.
• Places traffic cones and/or uses traffic signs and flags to perform traffic control in accordance with the MUTCD manual, wearing proper safety vest and PPE, as needed.
• Interacts and communicates with a wide variety of groups and individuals to include the general public, supervisors from all departments, co-workers, and office staff.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

High School Diploma or its equivalent and no experience is required; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Must obtain Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within one year of hire.

Successful applicants must have a valid driver’s license and pass a criminal background check (including driving record), drug screen, and pre-employment physical.

The City’s group insurance is currently through Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama. The employee’s health, vision, hearing and dental premiums are paid in full by the City. The City pays 50% of family coverage. The employee cost for family health, vision and hearing is $67.47 per semi-monthly deduction cycle and dental is $10.00 per semi-monthly deduction cycle. The total monthly cost for family health and dental coverage is $154.94.

Two deductions must be made from a check or paid in full prior to the effective date of coverage if family coverage is desired.
