HDR, a fully employee‑owned engineering firm, is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our Building Engineering Services Business Group in either the Walnut Creek or Folsom, CA offices. The role focuses on mechanical (HVAC and plumbing) design across a diverse set of markets including technology, education, healthcare, water/wastewater, municipal, industrial, power, and federal projects.
Responsibilities- Assume the mechanical lead and serve as the Mechanical and/or Plumbing Designer of Record (DOR) on small to mid‑sized data center, federal, and water/wastewater projects.
- Coordinate the mechanical design team through schematic design development and contract document phases.
- Establish client relations and participate in marketing, design, and production meetings regarding mechanical systems.
- Coordinate with governing agencies to ensure code compliance.
- Schedule workload to deliver documents on time.
- Conduct site work sessions with the Project Manager and other disciplines.
- Review mechanical and plumbing drawings for conflicts with other disciplines.
- Write and edit mechanical and plumbing specifications; select equipment, systems, and devices.
- Assist affected disciplines with addenda, RFIs, CPRs, and change orders, incorporating agreed‑upon changes.
- Provide construction contract administration as needed.
- Conduct QA/QC on the work of other engineers and technicians.
- Give direction to clerical and technical personnel as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- California Mechanical Licensed Professional Engineer (PE).
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum four (4) years’ experience designing mechanical and plumbing systems for federal, commercial, and/or institutional facilities.
- Experience with data center facility design and/or construction.
- Experience with water/wastewater, science and technology, hospitality, or finance facilities.
- Proficiency in MS Office, AutoCAD, Revit, IESVE, Trane Trace3D, or similar software.
- Experience in sustainable design/LEED desired but not required.
- Project Management experience.
- Preference given to local candidates; in‑person office culture required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Prior experience designing mechanical systems for commercial or institutional buildings.
- Professional Engineering license recognized by the state where the position is offered (PE or P.Eng).
- Experience with commercial or institutional facilities.
- Computer skills using MS Office, Trane TRACE, and manufacturer selection software.
- Prior experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm.
