The Public Works Department is currently recruiting a Public Works Maintenance Worker I/II to join the Streets Division. This is a non-exempt position, represented by the Local 39 IUOE union.
Under immediate and general supervision of the Streets Operation Supervisor, the Public Works Maintenance Worker I/II performs a variety of semi-skilled construction, maintenance, modification and repair activities in the Streets division and performs related work as required.
Distinguishing CharacteristicsPublic Works Maintenance Worker I (salary range M38: $53,474.23 - $67,739.56 annually) is the entry-level into the Public Works maintenance class series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents with basic maintenance experience learn maintenance pertaining to the services provided by the Public Works Department, use of tools and equipment and a wide variety of practices and procedures. As experience and competence is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence.
This class is flexibly-staffed with Public Works Maintenance Worker II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining the skill and experience which meet the qualifications for and demonstrating the ability to perform the work of the higher level class, at the discretion of the department.
Public Works Maintenance Worker II (salary range M44: $61,921.13 - $78,439.83 annually) is the experienced-level class in this series and incumbents are capable of performing a wide variety of work to ensure that the Public Works services and City infrastructure are maintained in a safe and effective working condition. Responsibilities include performing work in all operational and maintenance areas, depending upon the immediate needs of the City and the assigned department.
While incumbents may have developed skills in one or more areas of the trades, all are expected to be able to perform general maintenance and repair in all areas of assignment. This class is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker I/II class series, in that the latter is used for multiple City departments.
NOTE:
The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all the duties listed.
- Performs skilled and semi-skilled maintenance activities depending upon area of assignment including performing basic trade activities.
- Maintains and repairs a variety of hand and power tools and/or heavy machinery, ensuring they are in safe and efficient working order.
- Manages inventories and requests needed equipment and supplies.
- May instruct and guide temporary, work alternative and seasonal employees in basic work procedures and safe working practices.
- May contact residents to inform them of work to be performed.
- May perform routine cleaning and maintenance of Corp Yard buildings and facilities including sweeping, mopping, waxing, and cleaning windows.
- May perform routine cleaning and maintenance of vehicles including washing and vacuuming.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
The Public Works Maintenance Worker I/II position is responsible for the job duties listed above well as the following below, depending on their assigned division.
- Perform street maintenance duties; operate construction and maintenance equipment such as trucks, tractors, loaders and rollers for a variety of construction and maintenance operations involving streets, sidewalks and gutters.
- Use concrete cutting and breaking equipment; operate a jackhammer; pour and finish concrete; construct concrete forms and perform rough carpentry work.
- Set up traffic safety devices such as cones, signs and barricades as necessary.
- Perform flood control measures by clearing creeks of obstructions, keeping drains clean and clear, and preparing sandbags in case of emergency.
- Maintain catch basins and storm drain pipes.
