Position Overview

As part of the talented Quality Team, you will conduct analytical procedures in metallurgy with instrumentation required for the control of Heat Treatment and metal finishing process operations and resultant product quality, under the supervision of the Heat Treat Metallurgical Engineer.

Essential Functions
  • Prepares metallographic samples for testing to specifications.
  • Performs hardness tests on parts and samples.
  • Performs microstructural review of heat treat samples.
  • Performs analysis of steel shot for process control.
  • Reviews heat treat thermal process charts to confirm temperature requirements are met.
  • Supports, works with, and communicates with Heat Treat Dept. shop floor operators to ensure parts are properly processed.
  • Supports Heat Treat Dept. supervision to maintain production priority needs.
  • Prepares written Heat Treat Lab instructions to standardize procedures.
  • Follows special non‑production related parts and heat treat processes to completion and ensures the requirements are met.
  • Maintains written records of data from laboratory tests and of operating data from plant processes.
  • Designs and performs laboratory experiments for the modification or improvement of plant’s heat treat processes.
  • Maintains the laboratory and its equipment, and verifies the gauges meet calibration requirements.
  • Verifies metal chemistry of materials for control of Heat Treatment.
  • Assists with training and project management of student co‑ops working in the Heat Treat Metallurgical Lab.
  • Has responsibility for the Heat Treat Lab when the Heat Treat Metallurgical Engineer is out of office.
Required Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • College‑level coursework in chemistry, metallurgy, physics, mathematics.
  • Two to five years working experience in a laboratory, preferably related to manufacturing operations including metal finishing.
  • General knowledge of statistics, engineering principles, and failure analysis.
  • Working knowledge of analytical metallurgical lab techniques and instrumental analysis of metals and materials.
  • Working knowledge of mathematical calculations and data handling methods.
  • Working knowledge of process equipment functions and operation.
  • Working knowledge of safety and handling of hazardous materials.
  • Computer experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Preferred Qualifications

Associate’s Degree desirable.

Working Conditions

The Heat Treat Lab Technician works in a climate‑controlled laboratory at a dedicated workstation, regularly interfacing with test equipment and computers. The technician will also enter the Heat Treat shop to obtain samples and communicate with operators for production sampling, including working near high temperature furnaces.

Compensation

The hiring range is $54,300–$75,400 annually. Base pay varies based on qualifications, experience, and business needs. In addition to base pay, the position is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus and participates in Brunswick’s benefits program.
