The Department of Corrections is currently recruiting to fill a Steamfitter position. This position is based out of Taycheedah Correctional Institution in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
Position SummaryUnder the general supervision of the Crafts Worker Supervisor, install, repair and maintain all steam, HVAC and hydronic heating systems. Special assignment is to maintain steam traps in such manner that energy conservation is enhanced. Work in cooperation with the Institution maintenance staff, and outside contractors as necessary in the installation and repair of air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Works individually or supervises resident workers, repair and preventive maintenance work.
Work must be performed within established security guidelines.
This position is in pay schedule/range 04-00 with a starting pay rate of $48.09/hour, $48.86/hour, or $49.66/hour, depending on the leave selected, plus excellent benefits. Pay will be set in accordance with the Compensation Plan and Wisconsin Administrative Code in effect at the time of hire. A probationary period is required.

Job DetailsApplicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e. a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, or an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DOC sponsorship) at the time of application.
The Department of Corrections may conduct pre-employment drug screens. Any applicant who is offered employment in a position which requires a pre-employment drug screen must pass the screen as a contingency of employment.
The Department of Corrections will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection. Upon hire, all new DOC employees are subject to fingerprinting.
This position is not eligible for remote work.
This position has physical requirements, including twisting, bending, lifting, pushing/pulling, and ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
The anticipated shift is 7 AM - 3:30 PM.
QualificationsSpecial Requirements:
- Completion of an apprenticeship approved by the Department of Workforce Development as a steamfitter and/or possession of a current Journey level Steamfitter Certification
OR
- Formal recognition of status by the appropriate international or local trade organization or some type of similar formal validation of journey status
OR
- Applicants having training and experience equivalent to the formal apprenticeship and journey-level status may also be accepted upon submission of documented proof of such training and experience.
- Equivalent training and experience includes 8,000 hours of training and experience in all of the following work processes: (1) installation of residential and apartment heating systems; (2) installation of industrial and commercial heating, ventilation and refrigeration systems; (3) installation and repair of power house systems; (4) repair and servicing of all types of heating, refrigeration and air conditioning systems; (5) installation and final testing of all types of refrigeration and air conditioning systems;
(6) installation and final adjustment of temperature controls; and (7) completion of 500 hours of prescribed instruction. Such evidence may include letters or statements from past customers/clients and/or employers.
