The Admission Counselor serves the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at Pacific University. Reporting to the Associate Director of Undergraduate Admissions, the Admission Counselor will be assigned key recruitment territories, play a role in daily office procedures, and assist the Admissions Team in planning and implementing recruitment programs and strategies for the growth of Pacific University.

The Admissions Counselor will represent Pacific University in a variety of settings. Important responsibilities include independent recruitment travel, evaluation of applications, meeting individually with inquiring students and developing working relationships with high schools in assigned recruitment territories. The Admissions Counselor will join a highly motivated and supportive Admissions Team, working collaboratively and independently in a fast-paced environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Actively cultivate relationships with inquiring students from an assigned territory, visiting with them in their home regions and on-campus, evaluating their admission applications and individually encouraging them to choose Pacific University during yield season
  • Develop and implement a prospect management philosophy within the territories to reach recruitment goals and agendas with the Associate Vice President for Enrollment
  • Responsible for representing Pacific University at high school visits, college fairs, college nights and alumni contacts
  • Develop an understanding of high schools in an assigned territory and acts as the primary contact for those schools
  • Ability to convincingly articulate the value of a liberal arts and sciences education from Pacific University to prospective students, families, guidance counselors, teachers, and other constituencies
  • Coordinate on-campus and off-campus recruiting efforts not limited to open houses, admitted student events and application workshops
  • Meets individually on and off campus with prospective students and others seeking information on admission standards, academic and non-academic programs
  • Makes effective, regular on-campus presentations and campus tours to visiting groups of students and their families
  • Travel to assigned regions for possible overnight travel approximately 8 weeks in the fall and 4 weeks in the spring
  • Uses strong analytical and decision-making skills to read and evaluate a large number of applications while meeting deadlines
  • Contacts prospective applicants personally to encourage applications and follows up with admitted applicants to guide them through the financial aid process
  • Abide by NACAC and NCAA Principles of Good Practice
  • Perform statistical research on recruitment territory utilizing student database to inform efforts
  • Additional duties might include overseeing special programs and taking on new projects as needed throughout the recruitment cycle

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Reports to the Associate Director of Admissions for Undergraduate Admissions

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • A Bachelor's degree is required
  • Experience in college or university admissions, financial aid, or enrollment development work
  • Recruitment travel is required. A valid driver's license, reliable transportation and willingness to travel by air is required at the time of hiring and throughout the term of employment
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, excellent organizational ability, the ability to multi-task, the ability to be self-reliant and the ability to complete assigned tasks on schedule
  • A commitment of at least three years is expected, and career interest in college enrollment or counseling is preferred

Bilingual Spanish speaker

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & BEHAVIORS:

  • Strong understanding of the mission, philosophy, and value system of private, liberal arts colleges
  • Entry level understanding of recruitment philosophies and financial aid strategies
  • Candidates are expected to be highly organized, attentive to detail, technically proficient, and dedicated to the Admissions Office and the University.
