Position SummaryThe ESOL Teacher's primary responsibility is to teach, screen, test, monitor, record, and report the progress of English learners (ELs). ESOL teachers instruct English learners at various levels (elementary, middle, or high school) using research-based strategies of language acquisition to maximize opportunities for academic improvement and success. This position reports to the Principal.
Key Responsibilities- Provide English language assistance services using district-approved delivery models for ELs at all levels of English language development.
- Instruct English learners using research-based teaching methods and frameworks (e.g., SIOP) and a variety of supplemental resources.
- Assign lessons, correct homework, administer assessments, monitor and evaluate achievement progress, and record/share results with faculty, school officials, and parents.
- Prepare course outlines and objectives aligned to WIDA Standards and the academic language of Common Core/Georgia Performance Standards according to state and district requirements.
- Monitor, prepare, and maintain EL documents related to services, accommodations, and student progress as required by federal, state, and district mandates.
- Maintain classroom discipline and behavior outside the classroom as assigned.
- Collaborate with general education teachers and provide instructional resources to enhance teaching and learning.
- Work with support staff to provide the best instructional program for English learners.
- Conduct parent/teacher conferences (including LACs, ELL/TPC, etc.) to review EL instructional accommodations, progress, performance, and behavior.
- Conduct EL related professional learning for school staff; facilitate and/or participate in school events to promote EL parent engagement.
- Participate in faculty/professional meetings, conferences, and teacher training workshops.
- Perform all other duties as assigned and required to perform the above services.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or higher required.
- Minimum of one (1) year of teaching experience preferred.
- Must hold or be eligible for a Georgia Educator's Certificate issued by the GaPSC with ESOL P-12 Certification or ESOL Endorsement. Alternative: enrollment in a GaPSC approved ESOL Endorsement Program or passing P-12 ESOL scores at the time of employment.
- Elementary teachers must also hold ECE P-5 certification or possess a graduate degree in TESOL.
- Additional certifications preferred for secondary:
Reading Endorsement, Language Arts 4-8, and English 6-12. - Varied; supervisor is available to review established broad objectives; independent judgment required.
- Requires regular, frequent communication with internal school administrative personnel.
- Requires regular, frequent communication with different constituencies: parents and community.
- Excellent classroom management and organizational skills required; may be designated as a lead teacher.
- Applies, recommends and implements technology to improve the effectiveness of school operations.
