The Career Technical Instructor (CTI) – Special Education is designed to support students with disabilities enrolled in regular career, technology education program courses. The CTI Instructor’s role is to provide special education support to identified students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) plan and appropriate career and technical teachers in whose class the student is enrolled. The CTI provides resource assistance to students with disabilities in CTAE classes/laboratories;
assists in facilitating transition from school to post‑secondary education, employment, workforce, and career opportunities. This position reports to the Building Principal.
- Organizes and provides instruction that will assist students with disabilities in successfully entering and participating in all career and technical education programs.
- Identifies, obtains, and utilizes media, materials, and equipment in the CTAE courses needed to meet the unique characteristics of identified students with disabilities; provides related instruction for students as outlined by the CTAE instruction and the student’s IEP; works closely with post‑secondary institutions to ensure a seamless transition.
- Obtains, from the appropriate career and technical (CTAE) instructors, a list of basic requirements for participation in all CTAE programs; determines ways in which those requirements/programs may make accommodations for the student in conjunction with the appropriate instruction; assists in career and technical interest and aptitude assessment of students prior to enrolling them in the program.
- Assists CTAE instructors in evaluating whether or not individual learners are meeting objectives outlined in the IEP and assisting in determining class grades with appropriate supports as needed; maintains accurate records of all students and each student’s progress.
- Consuls regularly with instructors implementing career aspects of the IEP; participates as a member of each student’s Individual Educational Program (IEP) team and provides technology/career occupational input; determines the most appropriate job placement strategies for individual student in conjunction with CTAE instructors; communicates with the parents of CTI students regarding progress and/or specific concerns.
- All other duties, as assigned and required, in order to perform the above services.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate education field required. Background in special education and career technical instruction area of Special Education preferred.
- Minimum three (3) years of teaching experience is required.
- Prior experience/knowledge and familiarity with programs in a K-12 public school environment for CTAE service and resources providing transition assistance.
- GaPSC certification at T-4 level or higher in any special education field required. Must hold Career Technical Instruction (CTI) endorsement or enroll and obtain the CTI endorsement within the first year of employment.
- Moderate level of judgment: supervisor is available to review established broad objectives and approve executive-level decisions.
- Requires regular, frequent contact with internal personnel to discuss issues of moderate importance. Excellent interpersonal skills are required for interacting and working with various levels of individuals in community and families.
- Excellent interpersonal and networking skills are required for interacting and working with various levels of individuals.
- Requires excellent presentation, written, and verbal skills.
- Applies technology concepts to improve efficiency and effectiveness of data collection; must be proficient with computer.
- Responsible for the welfare of others frequently (more than three (3) times per week).
- Normal school setting/classroom/lab/studio environments.
- May require travel to off‑site locations and work sites.
