Substation Physical Engineer
Location:
Forest Park, Georgia (Onsite)
Role Overview
We are seeking a Substation Physical Engineer to support our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing the physical aspects of substations and preparing high-quality design packages for construction projects. This role involves coordinating with multiple design disciplines and providing technical support throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Design the physical aspects of substations, including layouts for the substation, foundations, grounding, conduits, and control buildings, as well as sections, elevations, and electrical bus designs.
- Prepare high-quality design packages for constructing new or modifying existing substations using 2D CAD-based modeling tools, adhering to established design standards.
- Transmit drawing packages and supporting specifications using internal document management systems.
- Provide support for Substation Construction, Project Management, and Transmission Maintenance teams.
- Perform site visits for projects, including pre-construction meetings, construction monitoring, and post-construction reviews. Some overnight travel will be required.
- Specify, order, and manage approval drawings for non-stock materials, and inventory materials for substation design packages.
- Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and internal committee members to resolve equipment and material issues.
- Coordinate and communicate with other design disciplines associated with substation scopes and conceptual designs.
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience:
- A bachelor's degree in engineering technology; OR
- A bachelor's degree in a non-engineering field with a minimum of 5 years of relevant industry experience; OR
- An associate degree with a minimum of 5 years of relevant industry experience; OR
- A high school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of 8 years of relevant industry experience.
Technical
Skills:
- Proficiency in using AutoCAD 2D design software is required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products is required.
General
Skills:
- Must demonstrate excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Must be a self-starter and exhibit strong problem-solving skills.
- Must work well in a team environment and be able to develop and build relationships.
- Must possess effective time management and organizational skills to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in Transmission and/or Distribution Substation Operations for an electric power utility company.
- Experience in Substation Engineering, Field Services, Switchboard Wiring, Power Delivery, Substation Maintenance, or Substation Construction.
- Experience in project development and cost estimating.
- Experience with document management and estimating systems such as TEAMS, STOMP, MAXIMO, or SCST Vault.
- A strong understanding of substation equipment.
- The ability to create Substation Physical Design drawings from a single-line diagram.
- A strong understanding of the National Electric Safety Code (NESC), National Electric Code (NEC), and OSHA safe operating practices.
- A good understanding of utility electric grid operations.
- Knowledge of basic electrical power system theory.
