Johnson Service Group (JSG) is a nationally recognized professional staffing and recruiting firm that is currently looking for Substation Physical Designer to fill a contract position in Forest Park, GA. This posting serves to fill a supplemental Designer/Engineer position within the Substation Engineering Physical Design group. We are open to considering all levels of experience, provided you meet the basic qualifications outlined below.
This position will be based out of Forest Park, GA (Metro Atlanta). Hybrid work schedule (both in-office and telecommute); currently four (4) days in-office and one (1) day telecommute (subject to adjustment). This position will require some travel (days and overnight, up to 25%).
The Physical Designer position is responsible for the design of the client's Transmission and Distribution Substations. The Physical Designer will produce engineering drawings, specifications, and material requirements for substation projects with an emphasis on safety, quality, scheduling, and costs.
Education:
Physical Designer
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology (Designer) Physical Designer
- Bachelor's Degree (non-engineering) with min. 5 years relevant industry experience (Designer) Physical Designer
- Associate Degree with min. 5 years relevant industry experience (Designer) Physical Designer
- No Degree with min. of 8 years relevant industry experience (Designer)
Experience (ALL):
Experience in Transmission and/or Distribution Substation Operations for an electric power utility company is preferred Experience in the field of Substation Engineering, Field Services, Switchboard Wiring, Power Delivery, Substation Maintenance, or Substation Construction is preferred Proficiency in using AutoCAD 2D design software, training, experience, or certification is required. Proficiency in using Microsoft Office products is required.
Experience (specific to each role):
For Physical Design/Engineer:
Strong understanding of substation equipment is preferred. The ability to create Substation Physical Design drawings from a single line diagram is preferred. Strong understanding of the National Electric Safety Code, National Electric Code, and OSHA safe operating practices is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Must demonstrate excellent communication skills (oral & written) and the ability to communicate technical issues simply. A good understanding of utility electric grid operations is preferred. Knowledge of basic electrical power system theory is preferred. Must be a self-starter and exhibit strong problem-solving skills. Must work well in a team environment and can develop and build relationships at all levels.
Must possess effective time management and organizational skills sufficient to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, setting priorities, and using effective time management and organizational skills to achieve project team goals. Must demonstrate a customer focus with a willingness to meet the needs of our customers and solicit feedback.
Major job responsibilities include:
Make SAFETY our number one priority using a "Safety First" mentality and leading by example. Provide input on the development and refinement of Control/Physical estimating practices, guidelines, and training Apply substation engineering expertise to support and/or perform QA/QC of peer or contract vendor deliverables. Participate in and support the company transmission activities and initiatives. Coordinate and communicate with other design disciplines associated with the substation scopes and conceptual designs Handling multiple tasks simultaneously, setting priorities, and using effective time management and organizational skills to achieve project team goals.
For Physical Designer:
Design the physical aspects of substations, including but not limited to, Substation Layouts, Foundation Layouts, Grounding Layouts, Conduit Layouts, Control Building Layouts, Sections/Elevations, Electrical Bus Design, etc. Prepare high quality design packages needed to construct (new or modify existing) substations using 2D CAD-based modeling tools, based on the company design standards. Transmit drawing packages and supporting specifications into SCST Vault using the Physical Substation Transmittal Packages Manual.
Provide support for Substation Construction, Project Management, and Transmission Maintenance. Perform site visits for projects, including pre-construction meetings, during construction and post-construction. Some overnight travel will be required. Specify, order, and provide approval drawings for non-stock materials, as well as inventorying stock materials and shop fabricated materials for substation design packages. Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and company committee members to resolve equipment and material issues.
