Apprentice Lineman for Transmission Line Construction (Georgia Statewide)
Job SummaryMultiple openings for Apprentice Linemen who work in the construction of Transmission Lines throughout the state of Georgia. Candidates hired as Apprentice Linemen must have 1 year or more of Journeyman Lineman experience and will participate in a 3–3½ year training program. Candidates with 4 years or more of certified Lineman experience may be evaluated for a 12‑month accelerated training program.
This position is physically demanding, works four ten‑hour days and requires overnight and out‑of‑town stays during the week near the construction site. Depending on the work location, you could be away from home as many as 200 nights per year.
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Required:
1 year or more as Journeyman Lineman - Preferred:
Experience as Transmission Lineman on voltages from 46kV to 500kV - Preferred:
Distribution Lineman experience
- Basic mechanical and electrical aptitude or background
- Basic knowledge of hand tools
- Ability to read, understand, and follow procedures, rules, and regulations
- Ability to take instruction, direction and translate those into actions
- Ability to perform physically demanding activities while working outside in all weather conditions
- Construction machinery such as skid steers, excavators, backhoes, cranes or heavy load rigging and lifting
- Transmission Line Construction equipment and installation work including installing, maintaining, and retiring of transmission lines on voltages from 46kV to 500kV
- Self‑motivated
- Possessing personal ownership of projects and assignments
- Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team environment
- Good communication skills

- Driver’s License and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
- Must have a valid CDL
- Pre‑Employment Testing
- Must pass the Construction and Skilled Trades Exam (CAST test)
- Practice test link and EEI online test preparation materials provided through application portal
- Interview
- Invited candidates may be required to travel to a designated Georgia location. Travel and time for pre‑employment testing are not compensated.
- Prior to Employment
- Pass a Post Offer Evaluation Test
- Background check and DOT drug screen after a job offer is extended
- Pre‑Employment DOT physical exam approved by company physician and Worker's Compensation Medical Questionnaire
- Successful completion of all required fitness assessments is contingent upon employment offer
- Weight Restriction
- Must maintain body weight at or below 300 pounds fully dressed (including steel‑toed boots and hardhat)
- Travel and Working Conditions
- Extended overnight stays and frequent travel throughout Georgia; up to 200 nights per year cumulative
- Work in extreme weather conditions: heat, cold, rain, snow, ice
- Position covered by collective bargaining agreement between Georgia Power Company and IBEW Local 84. Union membership is optional.
- Current starting pay: $6,458 per month / $37.26 per hour (not negotiable)
- Extensive training program lasting approximately 3 to 3½ years, including classroom and on‑the‑job training
- Upon successful completion, eligible to bid on Lineman positions as they become available
- Position classified as "Safety Sensitive" and subject to pre‑employment screening for fitness for duty
