APPRENTICE LINEMAN FOR TRANSMISSION LINE CONSTRUCTION (Georgia Statewide)

Georgia Power is seeking experienced Apprentice Lineman candidates for statewide employment in Transmission construction. This position requires prior transmission line work experience and basic knowledge of wire pulling equipment and procedures. The Apprentice lineman will also be required to pass a pre‑employment evaluation and demonstrate the common skills, knowledge, and physical ability required to be successful in this position. The job requires weekly travel, and all travel expenses and hotel costs are the responsibility of the employee, with a daily per diem of $178 provided for overnight lodging and work 50 miles from home.

205 Southfield Parkway, Forest Park, GA, but assignments occur throughout the State of Georgia. We anticipate filling several vacancies.

Job Summary

Multiple openings for Apprentice Lineman who work in construction of Transmission Lines statewide. Candidates hired as Apprentice Lineman must have 1 year or more as Journeyman Lineman experience and will participate in a 3 – 3½ year training program. Those with 4 years or more of being a certified Lineman may be evaluated for a 12‑month accelerated training program. The position is physically demanding, working four ten‑hour days and requiring overnight and out‑of‑town stays during the week near construction sites.

Depending on location, you could be away from home as many as 200 nights per year (cumulative, not consecutive).

Education Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent

Experience Requirements:

  • Required:

    1 year or more as Journeyman Lineman
  • Preferred:
    Experience as Transmission Lineman on voltages from 46kV to 500kV, Distribution Lineman experience
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Candidates must have:

  • Basic mechanical and electrical aptitude or background
  • Basic knowledge of hand tools
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Ability to take instruction, direction and translate those into actions
  • Ability to perform physically demanding activities while working outside in all weather conditions

Preferred: Candidates have prior experience with:

  • Construction machinery such as skid steers, excavators, backhoes, cranes or heavy load rigging and lifting
  • Transmission Line Construction equipment and installation work, including installing, maintaining, and retiring of transmission lines on voltages from 46kV to 500kV

Plus: Candidates should:

  • Be self‑motivated
  • Take personal ownership of projects and assignments
  • Have previously demonstrated the ability to successfully work in a team environment
  • Have good communication skills

Other Requirements
  • Driver’s License and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) – must have a CDL; verification with current and past employers at job offer.
  • Pre‑Employment Testing – must pass the Construction and Skilled Trades Exam (CAST test) and Practice Test Link.
  • Interview – if invited, must travel to a designated location in Georgia (likely the Atlanta area); candidates will not be paid for travel or time.
  • Prior to Employment – must pass a Post Offer Evaluation Test, undergo a thorough background check and DOT drug screen after a job offer is extended, and meet requirements for a Pre‑Employment physical exam approved by a company physician and Worker's Compensation Medical Questionnaire.
  • Weight Restriction – must currently weigh and maintain body weight at or below 300 pounds fully dressed including steel‑toed work boots and hardhat.
  • Travel and Working Conditions – extended overnight stays throughout the state of Georgia; must be able to work in extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow, ice).
Pay
  • Position covered by a collective bargaining agreement between Georgia Power Company and IBEW Local 84. Union membership is optional. Current starting pay is $6,458 per month / $37.26 per hour and is not negotiable.
Training And Development
  • Transmission Construction employees will undergo an extensive training program, including classroom and on‑the‑job training, lasting approximately 3 to 3½ years.
  • Upon successful completion of training, the employee is eligible to bid on Lineman positions as they become available.
Safety Sensitive Position
  • Georgia Power Company has classified this position as “Safety Sensitive” and, as such, is subject to relevant pre‑employment screening(s) to determine fitness for duty.
