Substation Construction Equipment Installer Apprentice

Location:
Hybrid: Transmission Construction Complex, 205 Southfield Parkway, Forest Park, GA
The Substation Equipment Installer Apprentice will support all major equipment installation required for substation projects that are part of the Georgia Power Transmission capital investment portfolio. This includes constructing and assembling transformers and breakers according to Southern Company standards and/or manufacturer specifications/procedures to ensure quality standards are maintained in a field environment. Apprentices will learn to read blueprints, decipher schematic diagrams, install mechanical and electrical parts, operate vacuum trailers, oil pumps, use boom lifts/ladders, cranes, hand tools and electric/pneumatic/hydraulic tooling to complete their tasks.
This position is subject to emergency overtime work, scheduled overtime work, and storm restoration response.
This position is a physically demanding position,works four, ten-hour days (Monday-Thursday 7:00am-5:30pm) and may require overnight and out-of-town stays during the week near the construction site. Depending on work location, you could work away from home as many as 200 nights per year cumulative not consecutive nights
NOTE:
This position has statewide responsibilities, and frequent travel within the state of Georgia is required – up to 100% of the time.

Education:
High school diploma or equivalent
Experience:
It is strongly preferredcandidates have prior experience in the following:
Transmission Substation Construction
Mechanical Experience
Industrial construction, maintenance, utility, electrical and/or military
It is aplusfor candidates to have experience in the following:
Working outdoors, with heavy equipment / machinery, heavy load rigging / lifting, emergency responders, commercial truck driving, tree trimming, or farming
General math skills (Addition/Subtraction/Fractions)
Basic hand and electrical tools
Tape Measure knowledge
Carpentry
Labor intensive occupations or physically demanding work environment
Working with tools including but not limited to drills, circular saws, hydraulic presses or other battery powered hand tools
Safety champion

Good communication skills

Transformer manufacturer or contractor specializing in the installation of power transformers
A basic mechanical and electrical aptitude or background
A basic knowledge of hand tools
Ability to read, understand, and follow procedures, rules, and regulations
Ability to take instructions, direction and translate thoseinto actions
Ability to perform physically demanding activities while working outside in all weather conditions
Ability to work at heights up to 50' from aerial boom lifts
Ability to climb extension ladders and work from various height step ladders
Exhibited safe work practices as evidenced by a history of working accident and injury free
Construction machinery such as skid steers, excavators, back hoes, cranes or heavy load rigging and lifting
Transmission substation equipment and installation work to include bus fabrication, foundation installation, print reading and layout, switch installation, structure grounding or other substation construction skills
All construction jobs require extended overnight stays and travel throughout the state of Georgia
Must possess a valid driver's license or be able to obtain a Commercial Driver's License within 6 months of employment
Note:
Any candidate who holds a current CDL will require verification with current and past employers upon job offerTo be considered for an interview, candidates must pass a pre-employment CAST test (basic mechanical aptitude) and POET (physical aptitude).
