Hours of Work

We are seeking a flexible part-time candidate to work at our first and second floor service desks. We are seeking a candidate who can commit to a regular schedule. Preference will be given to candidates with flexible schedules who are able to cover other shifts as needed.

Working Conditions

This position includes evening and weekend hours. Individuals will interact with a broad range of members of the community.

Physical Requirements

The work includes some physically challenging work such as pushing heavy book carts, moving furniture, locating and obtaining information and materials throughout the library of a wide variety of sizes and shapes, walking and standing for extended periods, and carrying a reasonable selection of materials between places where they are stored and places where they are used. This position also includes repetitive motions as employees check materials in and out and assist with processing and repairing materials.

Description

The purpose of the Desk Assistant position is to provide excellent customer service through circulation and reference assistance to library patrons at the first and second floor service desks in the library. Desk assistants also complete general circulation and library tasks.

Reports to: Library Director

Essential Job Functions
  • Complete general circulation and customer service functions
  • Process checkouts, holds, and returns from patrons
  • Receive payments for fines and replacement costs for lost or damaged library materials
  • Assist patrons with searching the library catalog and how to log on to public computers
  • Answer reference questions and provide reader’s advisory
  • Provide technical assistance to patrons on public library computers, personal laptops, tablets, and phones
  • Answer questions and provide assistance with specialized online resources (i.e. Overdrive and Badger Link)
  • Help make copies, print, send faxes, and scan to email
  • Schedule and monitor meeting rooms
  • Monitor patron behavior in the library and intervene per policy when necessary
  • Refer patrons to a full-time staff member when unable to provide needed assistance
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • General office skills
  • Customer service experience
  • Demonstrated computer skills and knowledge of the Internet
  • Prior library experience highly desirable
  • Prior experience working with people of all ages and abilities desirable
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstration or teaching experience desirable
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word processing and Excel spreadsheets
  • Familiarity with web-based email
  • Basic computer, software, and technology troubleshooting skills
  • Task prioritization skills
  • Ability to work positively with other employees as a member of a team
