Day shift
The school nurse is responsible for planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating school health services to maintain and/or improve the health status of students and staff.
Responsibilities of this position include:
- Administration of School Health Program: The school nurse addresses system‑wide health services issues that affect the entire school population. Duties include coordinating policies, reviewing program budgets, and billing third‑party payers for qualifying services.
- Care Provider: Provide assistance and care to sick and injured students and staff, develop Individualized Health Plans (IHP) and Emergency Action Plans (EAP), and perform necessary medical procedures.
- Community Collaborator and Advocate: Act as liaison between the school and local health services, share health data, and collaborate with student services personnel to prevent health problems from affecting education.
- Educator and Health Counselor: Deliver health education to staff, students, and families; conduct training on first aid, CPR, AED, and other health issues; develop and provide classroom instruction when appropriate.
- School Health Knowledge: Understand school health law, policy, and special education legislation; plan and coordinate screening programs; document health data and nurse interventions.
- Skills/Procedures: Competently perform medical procedures, supervise and train assistive personnel, and maintain competency in nursing assessment and emergency procedures.
- Maintain current nursing specialty and career skills.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Represent Fort Health Care in internal and external meetings and events.
- Complete department‑specific orientation and annual competencies.
- Associate Degree in Nursing plus a Public/Community Health Nursing Course (as required by the Department of Public Instruction).
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or higher preferred.
- At least 2 years of nursing practice in acute care and/or pediatrics.
- School Nurse experience, public health nursing experience, NCSN certification preferred.
- Excellent clinical assessment, nursing skills, and problem‑solving abilities. Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
- Current Wisconsin Nursing license, valid Wisconsin driver’s license, and BLS Certification (must be completed upon hire).
