Non‑Destructive Inspection Technician (NDI) III Responsibilities

• Inspect aerospace weapon systems components and support equipment for structural integrity using nondestructive inspection methods and perform fluid analysis.
• Perform nondestructive inspection on structures, components, and systems.
• Process parts and perform equipment standardization to prepare components before or after inspection.
• Detect flaws such as cracks, delaminations, voids, processing defects, and heat damage using penetrant, eddy current, magnetic particle, radiographic, optical, and ultrasonic test equipment.
• Determine metallurgical information of components according to alloy, temper, conductivity, and associated factors.
• Set up and standardize equipment, conduct tests, interpret and evaluate for acceptance or rejection, and document results.
• Perform operator maintenance and service inspections on shop equipment and tools.
• Perform silver recovery functions.
• Follow written instructions in the techniques/methods for which certified.
• Develop written instructions from approved general procedures.
• Determine test method and technique and prepare fluids and parts for nondestructive inspection.
• Interpret nondestructive inspection test results and provide information about defects to the repair center.
• Review x‑rays.
• Analyze wear‑metal content reports on engine lubricating oil and other fluids and recommend corrective action.
• Establish radiation areas for radiographic operations.
• Compute and monitor personal exposure areas for radiographic operations and monitor personnel exposure data.
• Ensure lock‑out and tag‑out procedures are accomplished prior to maintenance on equipment.
• Handle and dispose of hazardous waste and materials.
• Interpret codes, standards, and other contractual documents that control the NDT method(s) utilized by the employer.
• Prepare and verify the adequacy of procedures in the method certified.
• Approve NDT procedures and other NDT‑related work instructions for technical adequacy.
• Provide guidance and supervision to trainers and LevelI and II personnel in the technique/method certified.
• Provide or direct training, examination, and certification of personnel in the method certified.
• Assume technical responsibility for the NDT staff.

• Trained and qualified per NAS
  410 or ASNT‑CP‑189.
• Three (3) or more years of experience as an aviation inspector.
• Familiar with the scope and limitations of the technique/method certified.
• Familiar with codes, standards, and contractual documents controlling the method.
• Ability to pass a respirator physical and fit test qualification.
• Ability to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization (US Citizenship required for credentials).

• Provide guidance and supervision to trainers and LevelI and II personnel in the technique/method certified.

• Knowledge of electrical, mechanical, electronic, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems or other applicable technology.
• Efficient in record keeping and preparation of reports; capable of reviewing others’ work for accuracy and conformity to standards.
• Excellent organizational skills in prioritizing workload to meet aircraft delivery schedules.

• Walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for extended periods.
• Climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands; crouch, crawl, grasp or handle objects; use finger dexterity; bend elbows/knees; reach above/below shoulders.
• May be required to lift heavy objects exceeding 50 pounds.
• Type using a standard keyboard for email and software applications.
• Handle dirty parts and lubricants.
• Wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
• May operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, ground support equipment, forklift, etc.
• Work in a drafty, noisy, and dirty maintenance shop or outdoor environment.
• May be exposed to extreme noise, electrical shock hazards, or moving mechanical parts or vehicles.
