Responsibilities
- Perform the full range of repair, overhaul, installation, maintenance, and servicing of commercial and industrial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning units and systems.
- Inspect thermostats, governors, switches, fuel cutoff apparatus, burners, fuel feed, flame safeguard controls, damaged parts, and other safety devices.
- Modify and substitute components and elements of systems to meet specific pressure‑temperature or climate characteristics.
- Maintain and repair supply, drain piping, drinking fountains, commodes, urinals, showers, and commercial plumbing using plumbing skills.
- Repair, troubleshoot, install, and maintain commercial and industrial heating units.
- Use refrigeration cycle knowledge to diagnose complex commercial and industrial air‑conditioning systems and perform extensive repairs.
- Must obtain and maintain a Top‑Secret security clearance with eligibility for Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI).
- Must pass a urinalysis screening prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
- Must obtain and maintain a Universal EPA certification for refrigerant handling and other ozone‑depleting substances; carry a certification card when handling refrigerants.
- Required pre‑employment physical examination.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. during regular duties.
- Wear protective clothing and devices such as goggles, respirators, heavy aprons, hard hats, and gloves.
- May be subjected to short‑notice recall.
- Work may involve uncommon tours, fixed or rotating shift, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- One‑year probationary period may apply.
- Position has a 10% temporary duty travel requirement to CONUS and non‑combat OCONUS locations for up to 30 days.
- Position is designated mission essential per DoDI 3024.42.
- Position is designated “Weather Essential”; may need to report to work during severe weather conditions.
- Installations and repairs require use of ladders, scaffolding, and platforms; parts may be in hard‑to‑reach locations.
- Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, stretching, climbing, and working in uncomfortable positions.
- Frequent lifting, carrying, and setting up tools, equipment, and parts weighing up to 50 lbs. (occasionally more).
- Work performed inside and outside, often in cramped, dirty, and greasy conditions with exposure to gas, ash, dust, scalding water, and heated systems.
- Variable temperatures: cold storage rooms and high temperatures when working on boilers.
- Potential for cuts, bruises, burns, electric shock, and respiratory disorders from inhalation of refrigeration gases.
- Use of protective assemblies such as goggles, respirators, heavy aprons, hard hats, and gloves is frequent.

Experience may include paid, unpaid, volunteer, or National Service program work. No specific length of training or experience required; you must demonstrate sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work with normal supervision.
- WG‑09: Ability to perform Heating and Air Conditioning Mechanic duties under normal supervision.
- WG‑10: Ability to diagnose and repair large industrial air‑conditioning systems under normal supervision.
- WG‑11: Ability to modify and repair complex heating systems under normal supervision.
This job does not have an education qualification requirement.

- Selection is subject to DoD referral system restrictions for displaced employees.
