About the Position:
This position is established to serve as a Maintenance Mechanic to perform journey level repair duties in a variety of trades and crafts areas to primarily include heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, electrical, and plumbing. This employee may work alone or as a member of a team providing work direction to lower graded employees when required. The position is located within Womack Army Medical Center, Fort Bragg, NC.

Major Duties
  • Troubleshoot problems, determine repairs, plan sequences of work, and make the necessary repairs.
  • Work from blueprints and drawings in order to determine where new electrical systems are to be installed.
  • Determine such factors as load, demand, wire size, breaker size, and other such factors in order to provide proper balance in the new or existing system
  • Install, modify, and repair new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment.
  • Repair small to large commercial and industrial heating units such oil/gas fired furnaces and hot water or steam boilers.
Conditions of Employment
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
  • The employee must possess and maintain a Universal (types I, II and III) refrigerant handling certification as required by 40 CFR Part 82, subpart F, within one year of employment.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Lifting up to 45 pounds may be required.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work on call during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
  • Position is designated as Inclement Weather Essential. The incumbent must make every attempt to report for work on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Without more than normal supervision. I am able to perform the most difficult and complex Maintenance Mechanic tasks independently including: planning, laying out, installation and repair of large commercial and industrial air conditioning and heating systems, hot water heaters, gas and oil-fueled boilers, and chillers;

application of the National Electrical Code and local codes while planning, laying out, installing, and repairing all facets of industrial multiphase electrical systems; planning, laying out, installation and repair of new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems; repairing, constructing, and maintaining a variety of wooden structures requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness; and working on large projects with complex issues and extensive repairs requiring difficult judgments.
