The Traveling Aircraft Mechanic II (Sheet metal) performs the full range of military tactical aircraft maintenance. They maintain repairs and modify aircraft structures and structural components of moderate difficulty.

Responsibilities
  • Maintains and repairs aircraft components including flight controls, engines, hydraulics, pneumatics, fuel systems, and mechanical components.
  • Applies technical knowledge of airframe and power plant systems to diagnose equipment malfunctions and restore equipment condition or operation.
  • Interprets technical documentation such as blueprints, manufacturers’ manuals, and technical publications to solve moderate to complex problems.
  • Receives technical guidance from supervisors or higher‑level technicians and may lead teams through complex tasks.
  • Creates entries in aircraft logs and records when required.
  • Prioritizes workload to maintain project schedules.
  • Removes and installs aircraft subsystem assemblies and components such as engines, rotors, transmissions, and mechanical flight controls.
  • Service and lubricates aircraft and subsystems.
  • Prepares aircraft for inspections and maintenance checks.
  • Performs scheduled inspections and assists in special inspections.
  • Conducts limited maintenance operational checks and diagnoses aircraft systems using special tools and test equipment.
  • Maintains operator maintenance on tools, special tools, and aircraft ground support equipment.
  • Uses aircraft technical manuals, maintenance information, and action messages for troubleshooting.
  • Applies knowledge of electrical theory and specialty tools such as torque wrenches, micrometers, sheet‑metal brakes, and sheers.
  • Participates in maintenance test flights and operational checks.
  • Inspects all required aeronautical type maintenance.
  • Operates Flexible Engine Diagnostic System (FEDS) and holds a FAA Powerplant License or minimum five years of FEDS operator experience.
  • Obtains DoD EPA Refrigerant Processing Certificate Section 608 or minimum Type II certification when designated.
  • May serve as a Foreign Object Elimination/Foreign Object Debris (FOE/FOD) Program Administrator.
  • Performs non‑crew member duties as qualified.
  • Operates cranes with at least three years of experience and complies with OSHA regulations.
  • Performs aircraft condition evaluation (ACE) inspection duties when qualified.
  • Uses Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) when required.
Minimum Requirements
  • Valid up-to-date A&P license.
  • At least two years of aviation maintenance experience and three years rotary‑wing aircraft experience.
  • At least two years on the assigned Mission Design Series (UH‑60, AH‑64, and/or CH‑47) within the five most recent years.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization; US citizenship required for facility credentials.
  • Must provide own tools and toolbox; all tools must be shadowed and etched with PID.
  • Travel up to 75% of the time as operationally required.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Type using a standard keyboard and communicate via e‑mail and software applications.
  • Thorough knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting, repair procedures, and replacement of parts.
  • Broad knowledge of aircraft sheet‑metal/structural modifications and repair.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical theory and familiarity with specialty aircraft tools.
  • Working knowledge of technical publications and logistics information systems.
  • Prioritize workloads and lead teams through complex tasks.
  • Inspect and perform all required aeronautical type maintenance for Mechanics I and II.
  • Make entries in aircraft logbooks, military technical publications, and ULLS‑AE.
  • Meet FAA requirements for maintenance on FAA‑certified aircraft.
  • Hold a current FAA Powerplant license if assigned to Engine Specialized Repair Activity.
Physical Requirements /Working Environment
  • Walk, stand, and work on level or inclined surfaces for extended periods.
  • Climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands.
  • Crouch, crawl, grasp, handle objects, and use finger dexterity; bend elbow/knee and reach above/below shoulders.
