Military and Family School Counselor

Position Overview

This role provides a comprehensive range of Child and Youth Behavioral (CYB) counseling services to children of all ages of military service members and their families at military installations and off‑base locations. Services include non‑medical counseling, training and wellness presentations, consultation with parents, schools, and installation command, and support to staff and personnel of DoDEA, community schools, and youth programs.

• Provide non‑medical, short‑term, solution‑focused counseling—including assessment, brief counseling, consultation, action planning, referral, and follow‑up—to eligible children and youth.
• Deliver training and health‑and‑wellness presentations; participate in health fairs and other base/installation activities focused on children and youth.
• Enter counselor activity data daily through a smartphone or web application to maintain accurate reporting while protecting confidentiality and anonymity.
• Establish and maintain relationships with community resources focused on children and youth, providing appropriate linkages.
• Maintain a visible presence within schools; adhere to the line‑of‑sight protocol so an adult supervising the child can see the counseling session at all times.
• Partner with installation or branch Points of Contact (POC) to ensure services meet facility needs and remain within scope.
• Manage duty‑to‑warn and restricted‑reporting situations per DoD protocol; coordinate with Regional Supervisor/Director for case staffing.
• Communicate with Regional Supervisor; participate in regular individual and group supervision, sharing information about trends and issues.
• Respond to critical incidents and special requests as directed by the POC and approved by the Office of Secretary of Defense program manager.
• Flex schedule to respond to urgent requests from the Regional Supervisor/Director as needed.
• Participate in in‑services/training, Quality Improvement committees, initiatives, studies, pilot programs, and other contract activities as assigned or directed by the customer and/or Magellan.

• Master’s Degree from an accredited graduate program in a mental health related field.
• Valid unrestricted independent counseling license from a State, District of Columbia, US Territory, or Commonwealth that authorizes independent professional counseling.
• Minimum two years of post‑licensure clinical experience.
• Intermediate‑level competencies in technology and software (Microsoft Office Suite, internet navigation, smartphone/tablet application navigation, video‑conferencing).
• Ability to engage and communicate with military members or children in any physical location on a military installation or within a school setting, including traversing indoor/outdoor locations and working under diverse environmental conditions.
• Proof of U.S. citizenship and fluency in English.
• Pass a National Agency Check and Inquiries (NACI) clearance, Installation Records Check (IRC), Criminal Background Check, and FBI Fingerprints Check.
• Vehicle Operator’s License as required by contract; may also require a U.S. military vehicle operator’s permit for TDY locations.
• Meet the Magellan MFLC CYB criteria for experience with children and youth, including specialty in child and adolescent development/psychology. School‑assigned counselors must have past work experience in a school setting.
• Demonstrate sensitivity and empathy for service members and families, ability to develop trusting, helping relationships, and to work with diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
