Accountant II – Colorado Department of Public Safety

Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,463 - $6,055/month; $65,556- $72,660/year

Full Salary Range: $5,463 - $8,741/month; $65,556 - $104,892/year

About the Work Unit

The Executive Director's Office (EDO) provides strategic direction and administrative support to CDPS divisions. The Administrative Services Office supports accounting, purchasing, contracts, budgeting, logistics, property and facilities. The fire billing unit within the Accounting section processes financial and billing support for the Division of Fire Prevention and Control, primarily the Wildland Fire Management Section.

  • Core business hours Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. with flexibility.
Key Responsibilities
  • Coach, train and mentor direct reports on processes, customer service, and the values of the EDO.
  • Supervise DFPC travel, credit card, payroll, equipment, and invoicing expense reviews and coding; determine and prepare journal entries for incorrect allocations.
  • Review and approve travel reimbursement coding, credit card charge coding, payroll allocation coding, and equipment expense coding.
  • Supervise invoicing to external agencies for wildland incident reimbursable costs and prepare monthly CORE financial reports.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and technical assistance for all fire billing tasks.
  • Ensure accurate coding of all transaction types including incident and individual identifiers.
  • Verify employee timekeeping, approve leave, and conduct performance evaluations.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Six (6) years of relevant GAAP accounting experience, including complex data analysis and accounting system administration.
  • OR a combination of related education (27 semester hours in accounting or auditing) and relevant experience reviewing, coding, and invoicing complex transactions equal to six (6) years.
  • Current, valid CPA licensure by the Colorado Board of Accountancy will satisfy the six-year requirement. Attach a copy of the license.
Preferred Qualifications and Competencies
  • High proficiency in Excel, Microsoft Office, and Google Suite.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with complex policies and procedures.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Audit experience.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Experience accounting for Wildland Fires.
Conditions of Employment
  • Must be a Colorado resident at time of application.
  • Successful background investigation including polygraph, fingerprint criminal history search, and reference checks.
