Senior Tax Accountant / Accounting Manager

Tired of the traditional CPA firm grind? If you are a strong tax professional who enjoys client relationships, mentoring a team, and doing meaningful advisory work, this may be the kind of CPA firm you have been hoping exists. This is not a conventional, high-burnout public accounting role. Our firm is built around year-round client advisory, strategic planning, and a subscription-based service model that helps reduce the seasonal chaos many tax professionals are used to.

During tax season, our Accounting Managers averaged under 46 hours per week through April 15. That is not a typo.

We are hiring a Senior Tax Accountant / Accounting Manager to own and lead a section of approximately 40 to 50 clients. This is a highly visible role with direct client relationships, team leadership, tax planning, review responsibilities, and the opportunity to be a true strategic partner to business owners.

In this role, you will:

  • Manage a portfolio of 40 to 50 business clients
  • Build strong, trusted relationships with clients as their strategic accounting and tax advisor
  • Lead, train, supervise, and support Staff Accountants
  • Review monthly financial statements prepared by the team
  • Answer technical accounting, tax, and processing questions
  • Lead onboarding and initial strategy sessions for new clients
  • Conduct annual tax planning
  • Prepare and review tax returns
  • Respond to client tax questions and taxing authority notices
  • Monitor client profitability and participate in fee adjustment conversations when needed
  • Help improve systems, processes, and team performance as the firm continues to grow

The ideal candidate has:

  • A bachelor's degree in accounting
  • At least 5 years of public accounting experience with a strong tax focus
  • CPA or EA credential, or willingness and eligibility to obtain one
  • Experience preparing and reviewing tax returns
  • Confidence communicating directly with clients
  • A leadership mindset and genuine interest in mentoring others
  • Strong technical accounting and tax skills
  • A proactive, accountable, solutions-oriented approach
  • Comfort using technology, including emerging tools such as AI, to improve efficiency and client service

This role is probably a great fit if you:

  • Enjoy public accounting but want a healthier, more sustainable environment
  • Like being trusted to run your book of business like an owner
  • Want client relationships that go beyond once-a-year tax preparation
  • Care about culture, communication, and team development
  • Are energized by helping business owners make better financial decisions
  • Want to be part of a growing firm with ambitious long-term goals

This role is not the right fit if you:

  • Do not have at least 5 years of tax-focused CPA firm experience
  • Prefer a narrow compliance-only tax preparation role
  • Are not interested in client advisory or relationship-building
  • Do not enjoy coaching, leading, or supporting junior team members
  • Are resistant to process improvement, technology, or new ways of working

Job duties:

80% of time

  • Preparing balance sheets and income statement
  • Cleaning up client book
  • Reviewing Quick Books/Xero/general ledger activity
  • Bank and credit card reconciliation
  • Adjusting journal entries
  • Month-end or year-end close work
  • Preparing financial statement packages for business owner
  • Possibly compilation-style financial statements, not necessarily audit work

The remaining 20% tax probably means they help with:

  • Business tax return
  • Individual tax return
  • Tax planning support
  • Gathering tax documents
  • Year-end tax prep based on the books they helped clean up

Location:

This role is ideally based in Fort Collins, Colorado, and is designed for someone who can be connected to the team and clients. However, we are open to considering remote candidates for the right person.

Why this opportunity is different:
You will not be walking into a traditional CPA firm where success is measured by burnout. You will be joining a modern, advisory-focused firm that trusts its people, invests in better systems, values strong client relationships, and is building for long-term growth. If you are a talented tax professional who wants more ownership, better balance, and a role where your leadership actually matters, we would love to hear from you.
