Job Summary
The City of Fort Collins is seeking an Accountant II to join our Finance department. This is a full time salaried position with the City with an anticipated hiring salary range of $71,000-$87,000 a year. The Accountant II will be responsible for preparing and analyzing financial statements, maintaining accurate financial records, and ensuring compliance with governmental regulations and policies. The Accountant II will prepare journal entries, monitor expenditures, participate in audits and reviews, and provide financial guidance to department managers.
Strong analytical skills and proficiency in accounting software are essential. The ideal candidate will have 3 - 5 years of successful accounting experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Excellent communication and organizational skills are critical for liaising with internal stakeholders and external auditors.
- Compile and analyze financial information to prepare entries to accounts, such as general ledger accounts, documenting business transactions.
- Prepare month‑end and year‑end related work papers and reconciliations. Continuously improve the year‑end financial close by creating documented procedures.
- Analyze financial information detailing assets, liabilities, fund balance, revenues, and expenditures, and prepare governmental financial statements and other reports to summarize historical and projected financial position.
- Document and coordinate implementation of accounting and accounting control procedures.
- Devises and implements systems for general accounting, budgetary monitoring and control, and financial reporting.
- Advise departments regarding accounting procedures, and other financial matters.
- Provide information to external auditors regarding the City’s annual statements.
- Monitor and maintain accounting and financial reporting systems to ensure viability and integrity of financial information.
- Review, investigate and correct errors and inconsistencies in financial entries, documents and reports.
- Guide the administration of specific division or city organization projects.
- Perform special work projects including planning, design and implementation.
