Compensation: $30–$40 per hour (approximately $62,400–$83,200 annually), depending on experience and qualifications

Position Summary

The Senior Accountant is a hands-on, full-cycle accounting role in a niche, high‑pressure nonprofit and public funding environment . This position is responsible for end-to-end ownership of the accounting cycle for multiple clients, including AP/AR, payroll, grant accounting, reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statement preparation, while working directly with the Owner/Accounting Manager and client contacts.

This is not basic bookkeeping. We work in a highly regulated, deadline‑driven environment serving nonprofit and public funding clients, where compliance requirements and deadlines are non‑negotiable. The ideal candidate has experience in the post‑award grant space, and is a highly self‑directed, experienced accountant who thrives in this niche, high‑pressure setting, can navigate complex funding and reporting requirements, and delivers accurate, audit‑ready work with minimal oversight.

Key Responsibilities
  • Take full ownership of assigned client books, from daily transactions through month‑end close and financial reporting, with minimal supervision.
  • Perform full‑cycle accounting for assigned nonprofit and publicly funded entities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank and credit card reconciliations, grant tracking, and general ledger maintenance.
  • Prepare and process payroll for multiple clients, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely submission in accordance with applicable regulations.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports for clients, adhering to nonprofit accounting standards and funder reporting requirements.
  • Post and review journal entries, accruals, and adjustments as needed for accurate period closes.
  • Monitor and maintain clean, organized accounting records across multiple systems and entities.
  • Communicate with clients regarding transaction questions, missing information, deadlines, and financial results.
  • Work comfortably in a niche, high‑pressure environment serving nonprofit and public funding clients, where deadlines and compliance requirements are non‑negotiable.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes, improve documentation, and enhance internal controls; make recommendations to the Owner/Accounting Manager and clients.
  • Assist with year‑end close and coordination with external CPAs or tax preparers.
  • Support the Owner/Accounting Manager with ad hoc reporting, analyses, and projects.
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of full‑cycle accounting experience (AP, AR, reconciliations, journal entries, financial statement preparation)
  • Nonprofit experience highly preferred; fund accounting, grants management, and financial reporting.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards (e.g., ASC 958), and grant compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., Quick Books, Xero, or similar) and solid Excel skills.
  • Experience processing payroll for multiple entities and familiarity with relevant payroll regulations.
  • Demonstrated success managing multiple competing deadlines and producing accurate, audit‑ready financials under time pressure.
  • Proven track record of working independently with minimal supervision, managing competing priorities, and consistently meeting strict deadlines.
  • High level of autonomy, self‑direction, and proactive problem‑solving ability; must be able to identify issues, troubleshoot, and resolve them without constant direction.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and follow‑through in a high‑pressure, compliance‑focused environment.
