Job Description:

Assistant classroom support for general and special education teachers, providing instructional, physical, and behavioral support to students with mild to moderate disabilities.

Pay Range: $19.49‑$21.83 /hr (2025‑26 school year rates, may be updated for 2026‑27). Hours per day: 7. Work calendar days: 186. Duration:
Ongoing.

Summary

Assist the general classroom or special education teacher by providing instructional, physical, and behavioral support so students can fully participate in class activities with access to the general education curriculum. Support students with classroom work, personal care, social skills, self‑determination, and self‑awareness. Work with both special education and general education teachers to provide accommodations, materials, and clerical support.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist teachers in delivering targeted instruction, reteaching complex concepts, and reinforcing learning skills in individuals or small groups.
  • Support students in general and special education settings by guiding classroom assignments, assessments, and larger academic projects. Implement behavior intervention strategies to address social, emotional, and academic needs.
  • Proactively manage student behavior, including de‑escalation techniques for physical aggression and self‑regulation coaching.
  • Collaborate with teachers, caseworkers, mental health professionals, and other staff to implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and behavioral strategies.
  • Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, common areas, and during transitions, ensuring safety protocols, crisis response, and line‑of‑sight supervision when necessary.
  • Assist students with mobility, personal care, hygiene, and health‑related needs, including restroom support, feeding, and positioning.
  • Adjust instructional materials based on students’ IEPs to accommodate disabilities, use assistive technology and alternative communication methods.
  • Track and record student progress, behavior incidents, and intervention outcomes. Assist with instructional planning, grading, attendance, and data collection.
  • Attend and participate in training sessions and school‑wide initiatives to stay updated on strategies, interventions, and compliance.
  • Adapt quickly to changing student and classroom needs, fill in for absent staff, and manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Support school‑wide initiatives, special projects, and urgent needs as directed by administration.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Education and Related Work Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of related experience.
  • Experience working with special‑needs students preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable.
Licenses, Registrations or Certifications
  • Criminal background check required for hire.
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training required within 3 months of hire.
  • Special Education Paraprofessional Academy classes (5 within first 2 years of hire).
Technical Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • English language skills.
  • Interpersonal relations skills.
  • Mathematical skills including basic calculations.
  • Bilingual oral and written communication skills may be required or preferred.
  • Ability to work with students with mild to moderate physical, emotional, and special needs.

  • Manage multiple tasks, respond to frequent interruptions, use time efficiently, and demonstrate attention to detail.
  • Lift and transfer students, provide behavior supports, de‑escalation, and personal care following health care procedures.
