Job Description ##

Position Summary:

This Research Scientist will work on multiple ongoing and future projects while developing new independent research projects in natural resources fields such as wildlife ecology, carnivore ecology and management, and rangeland ecology. The Research Scientist will solicit support from a variety of funding sources including state and federal agencies, non-profit organizations, and foundations. The Research Scientist may supervise Research Associates, hourly employees, or students and may advise graduate students in the Graduate Degree Program in Ecology and related programs.

The Research Scientist will build a nationally recognized research program that conducts applied research and engages with ranchers, state and federal agencies, non-profit organizations, and others involved in wildlife and rangeland management. This position may range from 50%-100% FTE, dependent on funding.## Description of Unit:

The NREL is a research unit at Colorado State University with a mission “to ensure the sustainability of the Earth’s ecosystems through the generation and application of new knowledge.” The department’s interdisciplinary, ecosystem research promotes collaborations among disciplines and across fields of expertise at CSU and throughout the world.## ## Essential

Job Duties:

* Design and carry out advanced and collaborative scientific research to achieve research project objectives and goals. They will maintain accurate records of research findings and the analysis of results. The scientist will be expected to develop and maintain cooperation and coordination with a variety of partners at Colorado State University, other universities, government agencies, NGOs, ranchers, and other stakeholders.
* Mentor graduate and undergraduate students, research associates, and/or hourly employees.
* Lead and assist in the preparation of manuscripts from their research with colleagues to be submitted to peer-reviewed scholarly journals. They will also present research findings at professional meetings and workshops.
* Perform required administrative duties to help manage research projects, including employee supervision and managing accounts.
* Identify and pursue research funding from federal, state, private, and other sources. Lead proposal efforts and develop collaborative opportunities.## Conditions of Employment:

Minimum Qualifications:

* PhD in Ecology or related field
* Published scientific papers in high-impact journals
* Demonstrated experience in creating research projects, designing scientific studies, and collection and analysis of data
* Experience supervising employees and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students
* At least 5 years experience as a research scientist
* Experience writing proposals and soliciting funding from a variety of funding sources##

Preferred Qualifications:

* At least ten published manuscripts in a peer-reviewed journal in the fields of wildlife ecology, carnivore ecology and management, and rangeland ecology.
* Record of collaborative research and broader engagement
* Experience working with private, public, federal and non-profit landowners and managers and designing research projects to support sustainable land and wildlife management decisions
* Knowledge of ranching in the Rocky Mountain west
* Managing and working within teams to complete complex research projects
* Expertise in developing and testing non-lethal tools for carnivore management
* Demonstrated leadership in wildlife professional organizations# Salary Range $100,000 - $115,000# Required Application Documents
