Highway Maintenance Specialist – Crook
Location:
Crook, CO. Applicants may be residents or non‑residents of Colorado.
Pay:
Base salary $2,074.39 biweekly ($53,934 annually). Overtime $38.89 per hour.

Responsibilities- Plowing snow
- Operating heavy equipment such as tandem dump trucks, loaders, tractor mowers, etc.
- Mowing grass and weeds
- Removing debris from roadways, cantours, tunnels, and other locations
- Shoveling gravel, sand, concrete, asphalt and digging ditches
- Installing and repairing guardrail, highway markers, signs, warning signs, and lighting
- Filling potholes and roadway cracks
- Setting out signs and cones for traffic control
- Removing and covering graffiti
- Installing pavement markings/striping
- Stopping or slowing traffic in emergency situations
- Maintaining equipment and performing minor repairs
- Following safety guidance and wearing proper safety equipment
The role is dynamic; activities vary with project needs, weather, and roadway conditions. Specialists are on‑call on a rotating basis and may be required to respond to emergencies outside regular hours.

- 4‑day, 10‑hour schedule Monday‑Thursday during summer months (May‑September)
- Opportunities to learn new equipment and advance within CDOT
- Exposure to loud noise, fumes, odors, gases, dusts
- Use of respirators, ladders, scissor lifts up to ~20 feet
- Work near traffic; high‑speed intersections
- Operation of CDOT vehicles; ability to work in extreme temperatures and elevations up to 12,000 feet
- Must be willing to work overtime, evenings and weekends during emergencies
- Minimum 2 years of physical labor and/or heavy equipment operation experience
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with no air‑brake restriction for Colorado operations
- Basic computer skills; ability to learn new software/equipment
- Must pass required pre‑employment screening, drug test, and DOT physical (if applicable)
- Availability for on‑call and shift work, including weekends and holidays
- Willingness to reside within thirty (30) minutes driving time of a reporting location
- Strong commitment to safety and service
- Desire to work outdoors and learn new skills
- Problem‑solving ability and commitment to quality work
- Experience operating heavy equipment: dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, bulldozers
- Experience using hand tools and basic computer systems
- State service experience related to duties (optional)
- Maintain valid CDL Class A or B; transfer non‑Colorado CDL within 30 days of relocation
- Pass pre‑employment screening, drug testing, DOT physical, and safety training
- On‑call work and shift work; respond to emergencies without delay
- May be required to obtain Hazardous Materials endorsement within 6 months to 1 year
- Required to provide emergency contact number to supervisor
