Job Description

Teaches one or more subjects to students in an elementary school by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Reliable attendance and prompt arrival time;
  • Instruct students by lecturing, demonstrating, and using audiovisual aids and other materials to supplement presentations;
  • Prepare course objectives and outline for course of study following curriculum guidelines or requirements of state and school;
  • Assign lessons and correct homework;
  • Administer tests to evaluate pupil progress, record results, and issue reports to inform parents of progress;
  • Keep attendance records;
  • Maintain discipline in classroom;
  • Meet with parents to discuss student progress and problems;
  • Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops;
  • Perform related duties such as sponsoring one or more activities or student organizations, assisting pupils in selecting course of study, and counseling student in adjustment and academic problems;
  • Comply with school and school board policies and regulations;
  • Demonstrate professional growth;
  • Be prompt and accurate with required records and reports;
  • Use instructional and planning time effectively;
  • Assume responsibility for care of materials, equipment, and facilities;
  • Assume responsibility for a neat, safe environment for students committed to their care;
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the subject being taught;
  • Use out-of-class assignments, when appropriate, to support the instructional objectives;
  • Differentiate instruction to provide various learning experiences so all students can succeed;
  • Assist with after school events as needed;
  • Supervise students during class change, lunch duty and after school events;
  • Other duties assigned by Principal.
Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Valid certification to meet State requirements with specific endorsement in the area in which assigned;
  • Good health and no disqualifying physical or emotional handicaps; evidence of fitness to teach may be required from a qualified physician;
  • Teaching experience acceptable rating for such teaching;
  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four-year accredited college or university;
  • Considered Highly Qualified, possess an active Virginia Teaching License with appropriate endorsement in the area(s) for which they are teaching.
Language Skills

Demonstrates command of Standard English, both spoken and written; ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals; ability to write reports; ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of teachers, parents, students and the general public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume; ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Regularly required to stand; occasionally walk, sit, reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk and hear; frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus. Noise level is usually moderate.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of personnel.
