The Adult Basic Education (ABE) Teacher is responsible for the instruction of incarcerated individuals in a correctional setting in compliance with Department of Corrections and Iowa Central Community College policies and regulations. Areas of instruction include Literacy and/or High School Equivalency (HSED) classes in the subject areas of Reading, Math, Writing, Social Studies and Science.

Constant (67-100%)

* Effectively organize and teach individualized and/or group coursework in accordance with established program objectives.

* Organize and present various concepts to a wide variety of students with varying backgrounds and abilities and adjust teaching techniques according to students' needs.

* Maintain appropriate learning environment.

* Distribute appropriate materials to students as necessary.

* Administer required assessments for student placement and educational gains.

* Follow established testing guidelines and maintain security for all testing materials.

* Guide students in choosing attainable educational goals and follow up on goal outcomes.

* Motivate and encourage students towards their learning goals.

* Hire, train and supervise classroom tutors.

* Work cooperatively with other department, prison, and college personnel in ensuring student success.

* Follow Iowa Department of Education guidance and procedures for state and local reporting.

* Comply with institutional security requirements and procedures for staff.

* Enforce prison and school rules with incarcerated individuals and complete written appraisals and reports as necessary.

Frequent (34-66%

* Create and revise curriculum as needed to best meet program and student needs.

* Evaluate and accurately report student performance.

* Maintain enrollment paperwork, class schedules, waiting lists, and attendance records.

* Orient new students to the education program.

* Direct and monitor computer-aided instruction and assist students in developing digital literacy skills.

* Advise students of other educational opportunities available to them at the facility.

Occasional (10-33%)

* Participate in professional development activities and attend educational workshops and meetings.

* Follow protocols as required by the Department of Corrections and the correctional facility.

* Provide coordinator with accurate statistical data for periodic reports.

* Review current educational and curriculum publications.

* Stay up to date in current research and evidence-based practices in the areas of adult education.

* Complete required trainings and e-learnings.

* Other duties as assigned.

12. Remain calm under pressure and use verbal skills to deescalate situations.

13. Establish and maintain good working relationships with students, colleagues, staff, students, incarcerated individuals, administrators, and general public.
