Provides high quality instruction in field of expertise to ensure students meet course and program outcomes. Collaborates with college staff and colleagues to improve students' learning experience, and conducts research or scholarship to advance knowledge. Provides service for the benefit of internal and external communities.

Essential Job Functions Teaching
  • Provides high quality instruction in field of expertise, ensuring students meet course outcomes.
  • Plans, evaluates, and revises curricula, course content, course materials, and methods of instruction.
  • Selects and obtains materials and supplies, including textbooks and laboratory equipment.
  • Prepares course materials, such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts.
  • Prepares materials for laboratory activities and course materials, such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts.
  • Identifies specialized materials for outside reading assignments.
  • Initiates, facilitates, and moderates classroom discussions.
  • Supervises laboratory sessions.
  • Provides students course‑related experiences outside the classroom if applicable.
  • Assists students who need extra help with their coursework outside of class.
  • Maintains student attendance records, grades, and other required records.
  • Evaluates and grades students' class work, laboratory and clinic work, assignments, and/or papers.
  • Compiles, administers, and grades examinations, or assigns this work to others.
  • Maintains regularly scheduled office hours to advise and assist students.
  • Advises students on academic and vocational curricula and on career issues.
  • Acts as advisor to student organizations, ensuring adherence to college and university policies and procedures.
  • Clinical Instruction
  • Educate and train optometry students and residents to be competent optometric professionals.
  • Assesses clinical education needs and patient care needs using a variety of methods.
  • Coordinates continuation of patient care within NSU Health and with area eye care and healthcare clinics, hospitals, and facilities.
  • Maintains a clinical practice license and assumes patient care responsibilities while ensuring adherence to HIPAA, compliance, and standards of practice guidelines and policies.
  • Research & Scholarship
  • Conducts research and/or scholarly activity in a particular field of knowledge and publishes findings in professional journals, books, or electronic media.
  • Writes and/or participates in grant proposals to procure external research funding.
  • Reviews papers for publication in journals.
  • Supervises undergraduate or graduate teaching, internship, and research work if applicable.
  • Service & Professional Development
  • Participates in campus and community events, such as giving presentations to the public.
  • Actively identifies opportunities and provides service relating to fields of expertise and the profession for the benefit of internal and external communities.
  • Participates in college committees, task force activities, and events.
  • Other Assigned Duties
  • Collaborates with staff and colleagues to address teaching and research issues, and to improve students' learning experiences.
  • Serves on academic or administrative committees that deal with institutional policies, departmental matters, and academic issues.

  • Mentors junior and adjunct faculty members.
  • Keeps abreast of developments in the field by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences.
