Position: TEACHER ASSISTANT-BILINGUAL (PORTUGESE)

Position Goal

To provide bilingual instructional assistance in the classroom by assisting in a variety of activities, including the preparation of instructional materials, presenting classroom instruction, performing clerical duties, and supervising student actions to enrich the delivery of education. Responsibilities will be consistent with state statutes, regulations, and the educational programs of the Broward County School Board. The role may also assist with the effective implementation of a specific grant if necessary.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Provide academic assistance and support for individuals and/or small groups in the home language, under the teacher’s supervision.
  • Consult with teachers on programs and materials to meet student needs.
  • Assist the teacher in evaluating student progress and provide feedback to students and parents in a clear, understandable manner.
  • Help maintain ELL folders and record keeping of placement, files, achievement data, etc.
  • Assist with the administration of ESOL eligibility testing and/or other assessments.
  • Provide translation for non‑English speaking parents, including phone calls, notes, and letters.
  • Participate as a member of the school’s ELL committee.
  • Participate in ESOL Parent Advisory Council meetings as interpreter/translator.
  • Perform other non‑instructional duties as assigned, under the supervision of a certified personnel/administrator.
  • Promote all activities in compliance with the equal employment and non‑discrimination policies.
  • Participate in training programs to enhance skills related to job responsibilities.
  • Review current developments, literature, and technical sources related to responsibilities.
  • Ensure adherence to safety rules and procedures.
  • Follow federal, state, and School Board policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or designee.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
  • Standard high school diploma or satisfactory completion of an approved GED Testing Program.
  • Successful completion of the Teacher Assisting Curriculum at a designated technical college in the Broward County School District and a passing score on the Para Pro Test, or other officially sanctioned standard tests, demonstrating the ability to assist in instructing reading/language arts, writing, and mathematics; or reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English and the language representative of the targeted ELL population(s).
  • Sensitivity to other cultures and the ability to work with students.
  • Computer skills.
Preferred Qualifications & Experience
  • An earned associate’s degree from an accredited institution or at least 60 semester hours of earned college credit.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of demonstrated experience, within the last five (5) years, working with children.
  • Six (6) semester hours in the area of human growth and development.
Significant Contacts

Daily interaction with the assigned classroom teacher and students, frequent communication with other school personnel, and periodic communication with parents as directed by the teacher or administrator.

Physical Requirements

Medium work:
May exert up to 50 pounds of pressure occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force as needed to move objects.

Terms of Employment

Salary and benefits are paid in accordance with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of work year and hours of employment are those established by the School Board.

Compensation

Hourly rate: $16.89 per hour.

Pay Grade: GRADE 13. Classification:
Nonexempt.
