Primary Purpose

Provides high quality didactic and/or clinical instruction in the field of specialty to ensure students and residents meet course outcomes and scholarly activities. As Director serves as course director for the orthodontic didactic and clinical courses and may be given additional administrative duties.

Essential Job Functions
  • Teaching:
    • Provides high quality instruction and ensures residents meet course outcomes.
    • Plans, evaluates, and revises curricula, course content, course materials, and methods of instruction.
    • Prepares course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts.
    • Identifies specialized materials for outside reading assignments.
    • Initiates, facilitates, and moderates classroom discussions.
    • Supervises clinical sessions.
    • Assists residents who need extra help with their coursework outside of class.
    • Maintains resident attendance records, grades, and other required records.
    • Evaluates and grades residents’ class and clinic work, assignments, and papers.
    • Compiles, administers, and grades examinations, or assigns this work to others.
    • Maintains regularly scheduled office hours to advise and assist residents.
    • Advises residents on academic and vocational curricula and on career issues.
  • Clinical Instruction:
    • Assesses clinical education needs and patient and client teaching needs using a variety of methods.
    • Demonstrates patient care in clinical units of hospitals.
  • Research & Scholarship:
    • Conducts research in a particular field of knowledge and publishes findings in professional journals, books, or electronic media.
    • Reviews papers for publication in journals.
  • Service & Professional Development:
    • Participates in campus and community events, such as giving presentations to the public.
    • Actively identifies opportunities and provides service relating to fields of expertise for the benefit of internal and external communities.
  • Director Duties:
    • Serves as course director for Orthodontic didactic and clinical courses.
    • Oversees Predoc Orthodontic program.
    • Manages D3-D4 cases.
  • Other Assigned Duties:
    • Collaborates with staff and colleagues to address teaching and research issues, and to improve students' learning experiences.
    • Serves on academic or administrative committees that deal with institutional policies, departmental matters, and academic issues.
    • Mentors junior and adjunct faculty members.
    • Keeps abreast of developments in the field by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences.
    • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge:
    • Dental Medicine – comprehensive knowledge of information and techniques needed in Dental Medicine, including symptoms and treatment planning.
    • Education/Training – knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design and teaching for individuals or groups, and the measurement of training effects.
    • English Language – thorough knowledge of the structure and content of English, including meaning, spelling, rules of composition, and grammar.
    • Customer Service – general knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services, including needs assessment, quality standards, and evaluation of user satisfaction.
  • Skills:
    • Instructing – teaching others how to do something.
    • Critical Thinking – using logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions or approaches to problems.
    • Judgment/Decision Making – considering relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
