Overview
The HAZMAT and Pollution Manager is responsible for leading all hazardous materials, pollution response, and environmental compliance operations for maritime salvage and wreck removal projects. This role oversees emergency spill response, hazardous cargo recovery, waste management, and pollution mitigation strategies to ensure safe, efficient, and regulatory-compliant operations in challenging marine environments. The manager will work closely with salvage masters, project teams, regulatory agencies, and clients to reduce environmental impact, safeguard personnel, and deliver successful outcomes on time-sensitive projects.
PositionResponsibilities
- Direct all hazardous materials and pollution control operations during salvage, wreck removal, and emergency response projects.
- Serve as primary liaison with U.S. Coast Guard, EPA, IMO, and local/state environmental agencies regarding pollution control and HAZMAT operations.
- Lead risk assessments and develop incident-specific pollution response strategies, including containment, recovery, waste handling, and remediation.
- Supervise HAZMAT technicians, subcontractors, and project crews to ensure safe and compliant handling of hazardous substances.
- Ensure compliance with OPA 90, MARPOL, SOLAS, and other applicable environmental and maritime safety regulations.
- Provide technical expertise in chemical, fuel, and hazardous cargo recovery operations, including firefighting support and decontamination procedures.
- Develop and maintain emergency response plans, pollution contingency plans, and best practices for hazardous materials management.
- Oversee waste disposal logistics and ensure proper documentation, manifests, and reporting of recovered pollutants.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, regulators, and industry partners to position the company as a trusted leader in pollution response.
- Train, mentor, and develop team members on hazardous materials handling, spill response, and pollution control protocols.
- Manage budgets, cost control initiatives, and resource allocation for pollution control and HAZMAT operations.
- Participate in Unified Command structures as a senior technical advisor during emergency operations.
- Represent the company at industry forums, regulatory meetings, and maritime emergency response committees.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Marine Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Safety Management, or related field; or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum 8–10 years of experience in hazardous materials response, pollution control, or environmental management within the maritime or emergency response industry.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. and international environmental regulations (OPA 90, MARPOL, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, CERCLA).
- Hands-on experience with hazardous cargo recovery, oil spill response, and wreck removal projects.
- Familiarity with Incident Command System (ICS) and Unified Command operations.
- Valid HAZWOPER certification (40-hour) and Incident Commander qualification preferred.
- Strong leadership and team management skills in high-stakes operational environments.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills with regulators, clients, and internal stakeholders.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, environmental reporting software, and spill modeling tools.

Up to 40% travel, both domestic and international, is required based on operational demand.
