Vaco is hiring a Controller

Location: Ft Lauderdale, FL

Compensation: $120K-$150K base + discretionary bonus

Job Summary

Join us as a Controller, where you'll be responsible for ensuring the accounting and finance department perform their functions efficiently and the organization has reliable financial reports. The Controller will enhance the accuracy of the company’s reported financial results and will ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).

Key Responsibilities
  • Accounting and Finance Team Management
    • Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department’s goals and objectives.
    • Oversee the timely and accurate preparation of accounts receivable progress billings based upon specific contract terms.
    • Review accounts receivable aging reports and assist with direct reports for collections.
    • Supervise vendor and subcontractor payments and confirm lien waiver collection.
    • Monitor daily cash balances to ensure requirements are met.
    • Review and monitor the preparation of weekly payroll for union employees, including timely submission of monthly union reports.
    • Mentor and train direct reports to grow in their roles & responsibilities.
    • Perform special assignments as directed by the leadership team.
  • Financial Reporting
    • Prepare and review timely and complete monthly financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
    • Review financial statements with leadership.
    • Create budgets with leadership and manage to fiscal health.
    • Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management.
    • Prepare construction contract schedules.
    • Oversee the monthly job cost report process with leadership and project managers for use in contract schedules and work in progress reports.
    • Provide a system of management cost reports.
    • Provide financial analyses for capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.
  • Strategic Planning
    • Participate in ongoing strategic planning with leadership, performing due diligence and creating projections with different growth scenarios.
    • Prepare the annual financial budget and update forecasts quarterly.
    • Oversee financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, and planning tailored to construction projects.
    • Implement and manage financial control systems to track project expenses.
    • Coordinate with project managers to align financial practices with project timelines.
    • Prepare and present detailed financial reports to senior management and stakeholders.
    • Manage payroll for construction workers and subcontractors, ensuring compliance.
    • Negotiate contracts with suppliers and subcontractors.
    • Administer tax planning and compliance specific to construction projects.
    • Conduct risk management assessments related to financial operations.
  • Compliance
    • Coordinate provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit.
    • Monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants.
    • Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance or related field.
  • 6+ years in a senior financial role within the construction industry.
  • Strong knowledge of construction accounting principles, including reporting and job costing.
  • Experience with financial systems and ERP platforms in construction (Viewpoint, Vista, Quick Books Desktop or Online preferred).
  • Experience with a company of similar size (~$30M annual revenue).
  • Exceptional analytical, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills.
  • Ability to communicate financial concepts to non‑financial stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership, ownership mentality, and team‑building capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize, and manage tasks to meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
