Position: DEPUTY FIRE CHIEF OF ADMINISTRATION

This is an exempt position which requires highly responsible administrative work in the planning, direction, and administration of several divisions of the Fire Department.

Employees are hired as AT WILL employees that serve at the pleasure of the City and may be terminated at any time with or without cause. Plans, organizes, supervises, and coordinates the work of all members assigned to the specified divisions including EMS, Suppression, Fire Prevention, Training, Crisis Readiness, and Public Affairs.

Guides, advises, and directs the operation of relevant division as well as individual members of departmental personnel.

Ensures that work schedules, overtime expenses, payroll reports, and a wide variety of other relevant reports and queries reflect accurate data in order to assist the department in drawing proper conclusions.

Responds to all major incidents in support of Incident Commanders.

Respond to fire suppression incidents, fire prevention, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, disaster preparedness, and related programs promptly and as needed.

Supervises the Battalion Chief of Public Relations, Grant Writer and Data Analyst, Fire Department Administrative Support Staff, Logistics Manager, and Fire Mechanic Supervisor.

Oversees and directs the Administration of the EMS Division.

Observes and directs the administration of the Fire Department’s Safety program. Acts as the Fire Department’s Health and Safety Officer and the Infectious Control Officer.

Working knowledge of OSHA, NIOSH, and NFPA guidelines.

Coordinates the Emergency Management of the City of Plantation, under the direction of the Fire Chief.

Ensures and oversees the Fire Department’s adherence and compliance with HIPPA protected information.

Ensures compliance for the correct handling and record-keeping of controlled substances, in accordance with DEA requirements, as well as other relevant Federal, State, and local laws.

Identifies problems and takes appropriate action through either delegation or personal direction in order to arrive at an effective disposition.

Monitors ?re reports in order to identify trends and administers course corrections to improve service delivery.

Reviews existing programs and activities to ensure comprehensive services with accurate and up-to-date information.

Conducts research and develops initiatives to address necessary changes to the operation of the department.

Ensures compliance with the City Code of Ordinances, City Handbook, and procurement procedures by reviewing and monitoring procurement conducted by any member of the department.

Assists the Fire Chief in a variety of projects and assignments.

Attends meetings as directed by the Fire Chief.

Acts as liaison for the Fire Chief as assigned. Performs related work as required and as directed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of modern principles, methods, and equipment for efficient and effective fire service.
  • Knowledge of modern principles and practices of fire administration, fire hazards, and fire prevention techniques.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the city, including location of streets, water mains, fire hydrants, and principal fire hazards.
  • Knowledge of the laws, rules, and regulations relating to the city and local fire service.
  • Knowledge of modern methods and techniques of management and administration.
  • Knowledge of city and Fire Department protocols, policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Skill in written and verbal communication. Skill in computer literacy.
  • Skill in departmental management.
  • Ability to handle highly confidential information.
  • Ability to create and implement long‑range plans and programs (5 to 7 years) so as to make sound decisions on operational and administrative policies to assure continual fire service to the city.
  • Ability to prepare and direct the preparation of comprehensive reports, correspondence, and programs.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and evaluate the work of subordinates.
  • Ability to display and demonstrate positive leadership and set an example to others.
