description
this position is only open to current city of plantation public works department employees. Applicants must be either in a full or part time capacity assigned to the public works department to apply.
this is a non-exempt position which requires semi-skilled manual work in the performance of light and heavy manual labor of more than average difficulty in the construction, landscaping, maintenance, and repair of properties and grounds for various municipal departments of the city of plantation.
employees are hired as at will employees that serve at the pleasure of the city and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.
examples of duties
maintain center medians on roadways throughout the city.

assist in completing daily work orders.

cut and edge grass with hand tools and power-operated machines.

provide general care to lawns and grounds and remove dirt, rubbish, weeds, leaves, and other refuse from grounds and city buildings.

prune trees to eliminate hazards and preserve the beauty of the trees on municipal streets and city property.

operate sprayers and related equipment for weed and pest control.

install trees and shrubbery to maintain landscaping throughout the city and trim and fertilize trees, shrubbery, and lawns as needed.

perform semi-skilled landscaping tasks in the general maintenance of municipal buildings.

supervise and manage personnel of lower classifications.

erect road signs and barricades.

clean and care for public buildings and other municipal property, including sweeping.

perform semi-skilled carpentry, masonry, painting, plumbing, and landscaping tasks, as well as general maintenance of municipal buildings, equipment, and property, and assist skilled trades worker as needed or requested.

assist mechanics at the city garage in repairs to mechanical equipment (i.e., string trimmer, edger, blower, etc.).

conduct truck inspections weekly.

perform miscellaneous pick-ups, deliveries, and errands as required.

exercise care and safety in the use of equipment and tools required to complete assigned tasks, and have knowledge of safety rules and regulations prescribed by the city.

perform related work as required and directed.
typical qualifications
knowledge, skills, and abilities:

knowledge of tools and various equipment used in landscape maintenance, and general ground maintenance such as mowers, edgers, weed eaters, trimming hand tools, etc.

knowledge of tree trimming methods and relevant safety precautions.

knowledge of cleaning methods and skill in the use and care of cleaning materials and equipment.

knowledge of principles and fundamentals of horticulture and plant nurseries.

knowledge of landscape maintenance and experience with new installations.

knowledge of the occupational hazards of the trade and the proper use of safety practices.

skilled in written and verbal communication.

skilled in the use of common hand tools and mechanical equipment.

ability to perform general care of lawns and grounds.

ability to operate assigned equipment safely and effectively.

ability to plant and fertilize trees, shrubbery, and lawns.

ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and evenings, as required.

ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under hot and humid conditions.

ability to understand and carry out instructions and complete work assignments correctly.

ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with city officials, other city departments, fellow employees, supervisors, outside agencies, and the general public.

ability to execute a work project plan and complete daily work logs.

ability to operate a truck with a 25-foot long trailer.

education and experience:

high school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by a minimum of 1-2 years of experience in ground, street, and/or landscape maintenance or construction; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for…
