Environmental Safety and Occupational Health (ESOH) Specialist
Cliff Berry, Inc. (CBI) is seeking an experienced Environmental Safety and Occupational Health (ESOH) Specialist to support and strengthen our company's commitment to Safety, Integrity, Expertise, and Teamwork. This position plays a critical role in ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, occupational safety, and transportation regulations while promoting a proactive culture of workplace safety throughout the organization. The ESOH Specialist works closely with operations, Human Resources, supervisors, and regulatory agencies to administer safety programs, coordinate training, manage workers' compensation claims, ensure DOT compliance, and support continuous improvement initiatives that protect our employees, customers, and communities.
Essential Responsibilities
- Serve as the company's DOT Compliance Officer by maintaining Driver Qualification (DQ) files and ensuring commercial drivers remain compliant with Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). and company standards.
- Administer OSHA recordkeeping and reporting requirements, including OSHA Forms 300, 300A, and 301.
- Track workers' compensation cases, OSHA recordable injuries, restricted duty, and lost-time incidents.
- Manage workers' compensation claims from initial reporting through return-to-work coordination while serving as the primary liaison with insurance carriers and internal stakeholders.
- Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses, and first aid cases by conducting root cause analyses, identifying corrective actions, and tracking completion.
- Prepare and submit required reports to OSHA, MSHA, insurance carriers, the Department of Health, and other regulatory agencies, as applicable.
- Coordinate and conduct OSHA, MSHA, DOT, environmental, and company-specific safety training programs.
- Develop and maintain online and classroom training programs, including Spanish-language training materials and monthly safety meeting content.
- Coordinate employee training schedules and monitor completion of required certifications and regulatory training.
- Oversee new hire safety orientation and ensure employees receive required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety program information.
- Administer third-party compliance management systems for safety training and DOT compliance, including monthly updates and regulatory assessments.
- Manage client safety compliance platforms such as ISNetworld (ISN), Veriforce, and Avetta by maintaining current documentation and qualification requirements.
- Assist in administering the Workers' Compensation Program, Drug and Alcohol Program, NCMS compliance requirements, and Transitional Return-to-Work Program in partnership with Human Resources.
- Assist with developing and maintaining safety manuals, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), Emergency Response Plans, Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasure Plans (SPCC), Site Safety Plans, and other regulatory documents.
- Support implementation of ISO 45001 Safety Management System principles and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Assist with Radiation Safety, Samsara vehicle safety camera program administration, policy development, and corrective action tracking.
- Conduct facility inspections, job site audits, behavioral safety observations, and hazard assessments to identify opportunities for risk reduction.
- Recommend and implement corrective and preventive measures to eliminate workplace hazards and improve overall safety performance.
- Monitor compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, occupational safety, and transportation regulations.
- Provide technical guidance and regulatory compliance support to managers and supervisors.
- Assist with medical monitoring programs and other occupational health initiatives as assigned.
- Perform other related duties as assigned in support of the Environmental Safety and Occupational Health Department.
Qualifications
Education
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Management, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible safety experience, preferably within the environmental services, hazardous waste, transportation, or industrial services industry.

- Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
- Certified Hazardous Materials Practitioner (CHMP)
- Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of OSHA, DOT, EPA, MSHA, and related federal and state regulatory requirements.
- Experience managing workers' compensation programs and insurance claims.
- Knowledge of hazardous waste management, environmental permitting, pollution prevention, and regulatory compliance preferred.
- Familiarity with ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems is highly desirable.
