Position: Painter (Port Everglades)

Requirements and Preferences

The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Painter at Port Everglades Department.

The Painter position is skilled work at the journey level in painting building, fixtures, signs and various equipment. Duties involve the application of paint to a variety of surfaces using a brush, roller or spray gun. Work includes the preparation of surfaces and materials for painting and occasional hazardous work from scaffolding.

General Description
  • Performs a variety of journey level painting and related maintenance work.
  • Works under close general supervision according to set procedures, but determines how or when to complete tasks.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Requires one (1) year serving a painter apprenticeship program or professional painter experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses Required
  • Valid Florida Driver's License at time of appointment and during employment.
  • Transportation Worker Identification card (TWIC) within 60 days of employment and for the duration of employment (if required).
  • Valid Seaport Business Purpose Credential for the duration of employment.
Preferences
  • Four (4) or more years of journey level industrial painting experience.
  • Journey level certification in painting trade.

Scope of Work Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

  • Prepares a variety of interior and exterior surfaces for painting or finishing ensuring maximum finish life, protecting designated areas, preventing finish application to unwanted areas, and protecting public or other workers from contamination and spills.
  • Estimates and determines time and materials needed to complete assigned painting projects to facilitate scheduling, identifies approximate costs and staffing needs, type and amount of paint, finish, and coverings needed, and provides info needed to determine whether to do project in-house or contract out.
  • Miks and matches paints and stains using proper proportions of pigment, base, and thinner; applies paint to interiors and exteriors of buildings, special institutions, general building, furniture and equipment; uses spray gun and brushes.
  • Occasionally performs staining; uses brush or rag or dips objects into stains; stains shelving, benches, tables and cabinets prior to lacquering or varnishing.
  • Rigs and erects scaffolding; hauls and erects ladders; applies waterproofing to building walls; cuts old caulking compounds and inserts new; repairs bad spots in furniture; applies paint remover; neutralizes spots with alcohol or sands or scrapes; cleans brushes and spray guns and makes minor repairs to equipment and apparatus.
