Effective January 2026, the City has launched an Alternative Work Schedule designed to further support employee work-life balance — providing eligible staff with two three-day weekends per month through an every-other-Friday-off model. Nature of Work:
This classification involves more difficult maintenance and repair work in underground water/wastewater collection and distribution systems for the City. An employee in this position performs or assists in a variety of installation, maintenance or repair functions; interprets plans; installs and replaces meters; answers customer calls; troubleshoots problems; operates related equipment; and checks for leaks. This position also trains and guides new employees, enters and tracks jobs;

and responds to emergency situations.

Examples of Duties

Essential Job Functions:

  • Performs mechanical work in installing maintaining, modifying, and repairing the municipal distribution and collection system.
  • Enters work orders into the computer system.
  • Monitors assigned employees engaged in the performance of maintenance, repair, and adjustments to underground utilities.
  • Identifies and corrects the more difficult and complex causes of system failures.
  • Assists in the preparation of sketches for system layouts and installation.
  • Orients, guides, and trains technical personnel in proper procedures and safe methods for performing work assignments.
  • Repairs and installs water mains, new services, fire hydrants, valves, and sanitary sewer pipes.
  • Locates valves, pipes, and blowouts in water mains in order to facilitate repairing water main breaks.
  • Checks/inspects filters, pumps, connections, oil levels, temperatures, etc.
  • Operates equipment incidental to completing assignments.
  • Installs new water meters and meter boxes and raises or lowers meter boxes.
  • Repairs shut off valves, sanitary pipes, and service line leaks.
  • Helps lay sod; repairs asphalt; and picks up supplies.
  • Answers customer complaints.
  • Responds to emergency calls.
  • Assists in supervising the above work.
  • Trains employees.
  • Performs related work as required.
Requirements

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Supplemental special courses in mechanical maintenance and repair preferred.

Experience:

  • Considerable work experience in general mechanical equipment maintenance and repair.

Necessary Special

Qualifications:

  • Must possess a Valid Florida commercial driver's license, Class "B", with endorsements for air brakes with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must obtain a Valid Florida commercial driver's license, Class "B", with endorsements for air brakes prior to hire.
  • Registrations desired:
    Level 3 State of Florida Water Distribution License from FDEP in maintenance of distribution systems.
  • Pass pre-employment and random drug testing as required and monitored by DOT 49 C.F.R. Part 382.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through personal contact, the use of the telephone and/or other City-issued technology devices.
