Street Maintenance Operator

To operate light and medium power-driven equipment (Non-CDL), dump trucks, tractor mowers, street sweepers, crane trucks, concrete planers, forklifts, and other various construction-related equipment), City streets and rights-of-way, as well as maintain and upkeep streets, rights-of-way, parks, horticulture, and other City property. This is the semi-journey level in the Street Maintenance series. This position is distinguished from the Street Maintenance III in that the latter performs more complex and difficult equipment operation duties and utilizes heavier equipment.

Employees are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned areas of responsibility. Employees may be required to serve as lead workers. Although not the primary responsibility of the position, employees may, on occasion, operate heavy equipment.

Essential Job Functions (examples, not all-inclusive):

  • Operate and maintain light and medium-sized equipment and other ancillary equipment in support of the upkeep of streets, rights-of-way, stormwater systems, tree canopy, and City properties.
  • Participate in all required training classes both in the classroom and in the field and practice all safety rules and procedures; exhibit safe movements while operating trucks and equipment.
  • Participate in the repair and maintenance of City-owned properties such as parks, streets, roads, alleyways, and drainage systems; transport and deliver equipment from construction sites, maintenance facilities, storage yards, and other locations as required.
  • Perform additional grounds maintenance, construction, and maintenance tasks such as mowing and clearing fence lines of obstructions, grading, seeding, concrete work, truck driving, asphalt spreading, jack hammering, and a variety of minor repair activities.
  • Maintain records and logs of all work performed, perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections, and perform basic preventive maintenance on equipment as required.
  • Install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of street repair activities; direct and control traffic around work sites.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and others as needed through all methods of communication technology, including but not limited to radios, digital phones, and onboard communication devices.
  • Respond as needed before/after and during emergencies, weather events, etc., debris equipment, including front-end loaders, tractors, light and medium equipment, etc.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; investigate and respond to complaints from the public; resolve issues in the area of assignment.
  • May repair and maintain outside walks, indoor/outdoor lights, fences, driveways, streets, buildings, walls (stucco and drywall), ceilings/roofs, gates, doors (manual and electric), windows/glass, AC/HVAC as well as cut trees, grind stumps, and weed eat.
  • Perform routine cleaning of grounds and facilities.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent. A minimum of three (3) years of experience involving the skilled operation of light and medium construction and maintenance equipment in parks, horticultural environments, street repair/maintenance, drainage, irrigation systems, or related field. CPR certification, Forklift certification, Herbicide Applicator license, Defensive Driving course completion, First Aid certification, Trenching & Excavation certification, Confined Space Entry certification, NCDOL 10-hour Occupational Safety General Industry certification, Work Zone Safety certification, FEMA training completion, Flagger certification, Stars certification, Leadership training course completion and Small Engine Repair certification are preferred.

Additional qualifying experience or completion of coursework at an accredited college or university in a job-related field may substitute on a year-for-year basis for one year of the required experience or education. Possess or be able to obtain a valid State of Florida driver's license by the date of. Possession of or the ability to obtain a class B CDL.
