This is manual work involving limited skills in various maintenance and construction tasks throughout the City. Employee performs work of heavy manual nature, which does not require a high degree of manipulative skill; however, as work experience is gained, employees may be assigned to somewhat more difficult tasks of a semiskilled nature. Work is closely supervised and employee receives specific work instructions at the beginning of each new job;
however, constant supervision is not necessary for routine and repetitive tasks, which can be carried on without difficulty once they are learned. Work frequently includes the performance of heavy lifting and other strenuous tasks. Work is performed under the immediate direction of the supervisor and/or other delegated authority.
Essential job functions include:
- Loading and unloading dirt, shell, sand, cement, timbers, reinforcing steel, and other construction materials.
- Filling pavement cracks with asphalt; raking asphalt paving mix in repair of streets; patching pot holes with hot asphalt; placing lime rock.
- Assisting in digging grade and setting forms for concrete work; wheeling dirt, sand, concrete, and other materials; and tamping and leveling concrete. Performing sidewalk grinds.
- Assisting in repairing leaks in mains; digging and back filling ditches; assisting in caulking joints; cleaning catch basins; installing drain pipes; and unstopping clogged sewers.
- Driving automotive vehicles and construction equipment to and from job sites as needed.
- Assisting with preventive field maintenance consisting of oiling and lubricating equipment.
- Installing temporary traffic control for safety.
- Sweeping walks; removing refuse and paper from grounds and buildings.
- Digging and cleaning ditches and trenches; leveling dirt and asphalt; driving stakes; and breaking up rocks and concrete.
- Installing and maintaining street traffic signage.
- Loading and unloading heavy materials and tools from trucks and vans; moving or aiding in moving heavy boxes or equipment and large, bulky objects; and cleaning/washing vehicles.
- Receiving job training in semi-skilled and skilled trades.
- Following safe work practices to eliminate and mitigate hazardous conditions and behaviors at the work environment.
- Promoting a culture of safety within the organization.
- Performing related work as required.
Education:
- Graduation from an accredited high school/vocational school or G.E.D. equivalency diploma.
