Description

This is a non-exempt skilled field position responsible for performing maintenance, inspection, repair, and construction activities involving the City's stormwater conveyance system, waterways, drainage infrastructure, pump stations, roadside swales, canals, culverts, exfiltration trenches, outfalls, and related stormwater facilities. Employees in this classification perform skilled maintenance work requiring knowledge of stormwater operations and the safe operation of heavy equipment and specialized maintenance vehicles.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Stormwater Crew Leader or Stormwater Technician III and requires the ability to work independently while following established procedures and safety standards. Employees in this classification perform skilled maintenance work requiring knowledge of stormwater operations and the safe operation of heavy equipment and specialized maintenance vehicles.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Stormwater Crew Leader or Stormwater Technician III and requires the ability to work independently while following established procedures and safety standards.

Employees are hired as AT-WILL employees serving at the pleasure of the City and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.

Examples of Duties
  • Performs inspection, maintenance, repair, and construction of the City's stormwater infrastructure.
  • Performs inspections of canals, culverts, catch basins, drainage structures, pump stations, swales, outfalls, and stormwater conveyance systems.
  • Operates heavy equipment, commercial vehicles, and specialized stormwater maintenance equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Performs roadway sweeping, vacuum truck operations, storm drain cleaning, pipe jetting, sediment removal, vegetation management, and drainage repairs.
  • Assists in the installation and repair of stormwater pipes, culverts, drainage structures, and related infrastructure.
  • Identifies drainage deficiencies and reports maintenance or repair needs to the Stormwater Crew Leader or Stormwater Technician III.
  • Assists with emergency response activities during flooding, hurricanes, and other emergency events.
  • Maintains inspection records, work orders, equipment logs, and maintenance documentation.
  • Ensures compliance with City policies, MS4 Permit requirements, NPDES regulations, and applicable safety standards.
  • Performs routine inspections and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and reports repair needs.
  • Assists in maintaining inventories of tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Responds to customer service requests and assists in resolving field-related issues.
  • Performs skilled manual labor under varying weather and field conditions.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, and materials used in the inspection, construction, operation, repair, and maintenance of municipal stormwater drainage systems, waterways, canals, pump stations, and related infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety standards, traffic control procedures, confined space entry requirements, and safe work practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, utility maps, GIS maps, work orders, and construction drawings.
  • Ability to inspect stormwater facilities and identify maintenance and repair needs.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment, commercial vehicles, and specialized stormwater maintenance equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Ability to perform skilled maintenance and construction work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, contractors, and the public.
  • Skill in the safe operation, inspection, and maintenance of stormwater equipment, tools, and machinery.
  • Ability to use computers, mobile inspection software, work order management systems, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to maintain accurate inspection records, maintenance reports, and equipment logs.
  • Ability to respond to after-hours emergencies and declared emergency events.
