Genset Mechanic

Summary/Objective

A genset (generator set) mechanic diagnoses, maintains, and repairs diesel, gasoline, and propane generator systems, including their electrical components and fuel systems, to ensure reliable operation. Key responsibilities include performing preventative maintenance, troubleshooting malfunctions, repairing or replacing faulty parts, and communicating with customers about necessary work. Employee is responsible for practicing safe work habits and for maintaining a clean and safe workplace environment.

Essential Functions

• Inspects, maintain and repair all refrigerated containers and genets, as required.
• Performs maintenance in accordance with company standards
• Completes a safety risk assessment prior to all work performed
• Diagnoses complex mechanical, refrigerant, and electrical problems related to all Reefer systems (single & multi-temp), including cooling, heating and container computer modules.
• Performs repairs and diagnostics on starting and charging systems, complex cooling and re-charge, and electrical including common fault codes. Repairs include performing leak detection procedures, compressor replacements, rebuilding throttling valves, soldering refrigerant lines, evaporator/condenser replacements and front main engine seal replacements.
• Perform repair and maintenance on reefer units in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications.
• Identify and obtain necessary replacement parts as needed to execute repairs.
• Must be consistently capable of independently analyzing and safely resolving problems.
• Responsible for preventative maintenance and repairs of container refrigeration. Conducts general and non-scheduled maintenance, including inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing and/or replacing components and systems.
• Ensures safe use of all shop equipment, power and hand-held tools.
• Performs road calls and emergency services as necessary
• Communicates professionally with team members, supervisors, and customers.
• Actively participates in safety or educational training as required
• Follows all safety standards & guidelines, including but not limited to, wearing of safety glasses, wearing of steel-toed/safety shoes, appropriate safety gloves as needed, and proper attire
• Performs any other management requests or directives as requested
• Other duties as assigned

Experience and Skills

• TWIC Card (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) or ability to obtain one.
• High School Diploma
• 2 years' hands-on experience in generator set and cargo container reefer maintenance, diagnosis and repair
• Ability to utilize computer systems to diagnose reefer systems
• Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
• Must be able to speak and read conversational English

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
