This is a non‑exempt position, responsible for water safety work, providing the safest possible conditions for swimming pool patrons and bathers at the City’s Aquatic Facility.
Employees are hired as AT‑WILL and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.
Responsibilities- Operate the City’s Aquatic Facility safely and efficiently.
- Promptly perform emergency lifesaving and first‑aid tasks as needed.
- Observe swimmers and perform rescues, CPR, AED, and first aid.
- Communicate and enforce rules, regulations, and ordinances governing pool activities to prevent accidents and maintain order in a professional manner.
- Provide emergency care and treatment until emergency medical services arrive.
- Perform maintenance duties to keep the facility clean and safe.
- Instruct swimming and water‑safety classes for various age groups.
- Attend scheduled in‑service trainings.
- Complete the monthly swim set assigned by the Aquatic Manager.
- Pass announced or unannounced audits.
- Assist in the preparation and clean‑up of the aquatic facility during major storms.
- Perform related work as required and directed.
- Available to work a minimum of 24 hours per week.
- Current American Red Cross certifications in Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR, and AED.
- Water Safety Instructor certification, or ability to obtain it within one year.
- Ability to pass the Plantation Aquatic Complex Lifeguard Skills Test.
- Complete and pass a Level 2 Background Screening as required by the State of Florida.
- Knowledge, capability, and conformance with American Red Cross lifeguarding, CPR, AED, and first‑aid skills.
- Ability to recognize potentially harmful situations and take immediate, appropriate action.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
- Ability to operate a City vehicle and possess the required license.
Safety and rescue equipment; small hand tools for minor pool maintenance; phone/walkie‑talkie; chemical test kit; pool vacuum; brushes; electric pressure washer; and various pool cleaning materials.
Physical DemandsMust be able to see, sit, stoop, kneel, stand, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects. Lifeguards must be proficient swimmers and able to perform proper rescue and first‑aid techniques. The position requires maintaining focus for multiple hours at a time in sunny, hot, humid conditions.
Background ScreeningIncumbents in this job class are required to undergo a Level 2 Background Screening as required by the State of Florida, including a photograph and fingerprint‑based searches of national criminal records via the electronic Live Scan process.

This is a designated Recovery classification in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee to work during declared emergencies. Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
