Institutional Superintendent Warden

Job Description

As the Executive Leader and Warden of the Iowa State Penitentiary, this position oversees the operations of a maximum-security correctional program. The role serves as the appointing authority for the institution, managing all personnel activities including recruitment, training, and disciplinary matters. Additionally, the Warden ensures a safe and humane environment by developing comprehensive policies and maintaining collaborative relations with internal and external stakeholders.

The State of Iowa participates in E-Verify, a federal program that helps employers confirm the employment eligibility of all newly hired employees. Within the required timeframe, new hires will be verified through the E-Verify system to ensure authorization to work in the United States. The State of Iowa also complies with the federal Right to Work laws, which protect employees’ rights to work without being required to join a labor organization.

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university and the equivalent of five years of full-time management experience in a correctional, mental health, intellectual disability or juvenile correctional or training facility;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting the equivalent of one year of the above type full-time work experience for each year of the required education to a maximum substitution of four years;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting the equivalent of one year (twenty-four semester or equivalent hours) of graduate level coursework in penology, the social/behavioral sciences, business administration or public administration, for each year of the required full-time experience to a maximum substitution of two years.
