Hours:
6:00am – 6:30pm, every other weekend.
Provides basic patient care under the direction of a licensed nurse to a wide range of patient populations, including Adult, Medical/Surgical, Geriatric, Telemetry, Cardiac, Neonate, Infant, Toddler, School Age, Adolescent, and Psychiatric care patients.
Responsibilities- Perform bedside shift report at the beginning and end of each shift.
- Follow policies and procedures to keep patients safe from falls.
- Assist in wound prevention and prevention of hospital-acquired pressure injuries.
- Care for restrained patients and monitor them for safety as directed by the licensed nurse.
- Use equipment and supplies cost‑consciously.
- Adhere to safety practices for personal protection (infection control devices, lifts, gait belts, eye shields, gloves).
- Demonstrate accurate keyboarding proficiency and computer navigation skills.
- Use basic math to calculate intake and output.
- Set up equipment such as oxygen supplies, portable X‑ray machines, and overhead irrigation bottles.
- Answer patient call lights promptly and handle requests or report to a co‑worker as necessary.
- Perform skin assessments and report abnormal results to the licensed nurse in a timely manner.
- Assist with activities of daily living (ADLs) and maintain clean patient rooms, changing linens as appropriate.
- Collect and correctly label specimens such as urine, feces, or sputum; deliver messages, documents, and specimens.
- Feed patients who are unable to feed themselves.
- Observe and record patient conditions, including intake/output and vital signs, and report changes to professional staff promptly.
- Provide help walking, exercising, and moving patients in and out of bed.
- Transport patients to treatment units using a wheelchair or stretcher.
- Turn and reposition patients, alone or with assistance, to prevent pressure ulcers.
- Proactively monitor patients for safety and communicate the need for monitoring devices (alarms) to the licensed nurse.
- Consistently use patient safety devices.
- Document all activities accurately and timely in the medical record.
- Perform blood glucose monitoring and report abnormal results to the licensed nurse promptly.
- Conduct quality monitoring as directed (e.g., BGM).
- Use bed/chair alarms appropriately for fall prevention.
- Greet visitors and callers, determine purpose of visit or call, and direct them to appropriate staff.
- Facilitate admissions, discharges, and transfers in collaboration with other staff.
- Operate office equipment such as the nurse call system, fax, scanners, photocopier, computer system, telephone system, and telemetry.
- Accurately enter orders and perform clerical and administrative functions, including inventory management.
- Perform quality checks on equipment (e.g., crash cart, transport monitor).
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Completion of a CNA course (or completion within four months of hire).
- Computer experience.
- Health‑care experience within the last five years.
- Emergency First Response certification and choking training within 90 days of hire.
- MOAB certification within 12 months of hire.
- Restraint training completion after hire.
- Mandatory reporting:
Adult Abuse – Iowa Department of Human Services within 180 days;
Child Abuse – Iowa Department of Human Services within 180 days.
