Summary
Under the direction of the Team Lead, the BET (Bird Environmental Team) Operator is responsible for supporting bird monitoring and environmental activities for a tailings/wastewater operation on a client site in a safe, productive, and efficient manner according to the scope of the project and the work method being performed. The operator will also clean/maintain equipment, assist with any labor task, and comply with all policies and procedures.

- Perform general/manual labor duties and tasks as required; maintenance, troubleshooting, switching out propane tanks, and any other labor tasks as required, possibly on or around bodies of water.
- Operate a SHERPA ATV, Kubota, Argo, Loader, zoom boom, and other small equipment during labor related activities in a safe, productive and productive manner.
- Conduct pre‑operational checks on the equipment listed above, and keep equipment clean and tidy.
- Conduct set up, maintenance, and take down/removal of bird cannons and bird deterrents.
- Drive company or light duty assigned vehicles on site, transport employees to site locations in a safe and efficient manner.
- Operate work boat and ice breaker on tailings ponds as required.
- Accept instructions from the Team Lead and/or Shift Supervisor as directed, and adjust work and strategy according to changing conditions, policies, and procedures as needed.
- Participate in toolbox meetings, provide suggestions for improvement and safety.
- Advise Team Lead or Shift Supervisor of any required maintenance or repairs of the equipment.
- Maintain a safe disposition at all times, ensure the safety of the client site and more importantly, the safety of fellow personnel/drivers.
- Completion of a High School Diploma, or a GED equivalent is required.
- A valid Class 5 License (or equivalent) is required, along with a satisfactory 3-year Drivers Abstract.
- CSO or BSO or OSSA/CSTS 09 is required.
- At least 1+ years of construction experience is required. Candidates with experience operating 980 Loader, SHERP ATV, Kubota, Argo, Zoom Boom & small equipment is required.
- Boat / Pleasure Craft License is required (MED A3 is an asset).
- Understand the impact that tailings have on birds, the impact on the environment, and the impact to overall operations.
- Understanding of vehicles, boating practices, heavy equipment, basic maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Physically demanding role, which requires candidate to be physically fit and able bodied with ability to lift up to 23 kgs (50 lbs).
- Half‑mask fit is required (must be clean shaven).
This is full‑time position located north of Fort McMurray, AB at the Syncrude site.
Work Schedule:
6 on and 6 off (3 days/ 3 nights/ 6 off); 12 hours per day.
