Software Engineer – Cyber Security Defensive Operations

We are looking for a Software Engineer to support Cyber Security Defensive Operations through the configuration of a Cyber Range consisting of 100s to 1000s of VMs utilizing Infrastructure as Code (IaC), Terraform, Ansible, VMWare and other automation technologies. You will work closely with Hunt, Red and Blue Team operators to capture their desired configurations for the Cyber Security Range to support training, force‑on‑force exercises, and the mimicking of customer infrastructures.

You will collaborate with a team of Software Engineers, System Administrators, Network Engineers and Systems Engineers supporting the Cyber Range and develop innovative solutions to complex problems. You will be part of a larger development team supporting the Cyber Security Directorate’s Defensive Network Operations organization with direct mission support activities when not working on the Cyber Range.

• Configure and maintain a large‑scale Cyber Range environment.
• Work with Red, Blue, and Hunt teams to translate operational requirements into infrastructure code.
• Develop and implement solutions using IaC, Terraform, Ansible, and other automation tools.
• Support Defensive Network Operations with mission support activities.
• Participate in troubleshooting, monitoring, and continuous improvement of the Cyber Range infrastructure.

• Bachelor’s degree plus 8 years of relevant experience, or Master’s degree plus 6 years of relevant experience. An Associate’s degree plus 10 years of relevant experience, or high school diploma/GED plus 12 years of relevant experience may be considered.
• Computer Science degree or related field.
• TS/SCI Clearance with Polygraph (required).
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
• Proficiency in scripting languages such as Bash, Power Shell, Batch, and Python.
• Experience with networking and virtualization.
• Experience with Terraform and Ansible.
• Experience with cybersecurity tools, network configurations, and operational tools.
• Network Engineering experience with Arista, Cisco, and Juniper.
• Knowledge of operating systems, including Windows and Linux, application behaviors, and network traffic analysis.
• Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment and adapt to flexible customer requirements.

• Experience operating in an agile development environment and Dev Ops.
• Experience with container technologies such as Kubernetes and Docker.
• Knowledge of penetration testing or red team operations.
• Experience utilizing and developing with Splunk.
• Experience with Nutanix.
• Defensive Cyber Security Operations experience.
