Surveyor Technician

This Surveyor role supports a field survey crew by assisting the Crew Chief with day-to-day survey operations. The position focuses on delivering accurate and thorough survey data that meets regulatory requirements while maintaining a strong emphasis on safety, equipment care, and professional conduct in the field. You will operate survey instruments, collect and document field data, and help locate and record features in a variety of outdoor environments.

The role involves extensive walking in all types of terrain and weather conditions, and may require occasional overnight travel.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Crew Chief in the operation of a field survey crew to complete land and topographic surveys.
  • Operate survey equipment, including total stations and GPS instruments, to accurately collect field data.
  • Accurately and efficiently locate and document field features according to project and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure the quality of survey work by maintaining accuracy, thoroughness, and compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Maintain a safe work environment for yourself and the crew by following established safety procedures and practices.
  • Protect, clean, and properly maintain survey equipment, tools, and vehicles to ensure reliable operation.
  • Perform fieldwork that requires extensive walking in various terrains and weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
  • Support construction and land survey activities, including topographic surveys, ALTA surveys, and related field operations.
  • Use survey CAD and related tools as needed to support survey documentation and data management.
  • Demonstrate professional conduct and strong public relations when interacting with clients, stakeholders, and the general public.
  • Participate in training and mentoring opportunities to develop skills and advance your career within the organization.
  • Travel overnight on occasion as required to support field survey projects in different locations.
Essential Skills
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One (1) to two (2) years of progressive experience in land survey field operations preferred.
  • Proficiency with land survey equipment, including total stations and GPS instruments, preferred.
  • Experience with land surveying, topographic surveys, ALTA surveys, and construction-related survey activities.
  • Good technical skills and the ability to learn and apply survey methods and procedures.
  • Self-motivated with an entrepreneurial spirit and the ability to work independently when required.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a methodical, analytical approach to work.
  • Process-oriented mindset, including being steady, helpful, consistent, detail-oriented, precise, and structured.
  • Comfort working outdoors year-round in all types of terrain and in extreme heat and cold.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable motor vehicle record.
  • Ability to successfully complete a check.
  • Ability to successfully complete a drug test.

Skills & Qualifications
  • EFB (electronic field book) data collection experience preferred.
  • Experience using Trimble GPS or similar survey GPS systems.
  • Familiarity with survey CAD software to support data processing and documentation.
  • Motivation to learn and develop a long-term career path in surveying.

Work Environment

This role is primarily field-based and involves working outdoors year-round in a wide range of weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold. You will spend much of your time walking over varied and sometimes challenging terrain while operating survey instruments such as total stations, GPS units (including Trimble GPS), and electronic field data collection equipment. The position may require some overnight travel to support projects in different locations and offers access to multiple office locations for coordination, training, and collaboration.
