Senior Mechanical Estimator Overview

The Senior Mechanical Estimator develops long‑term customer relationships with specific sectors of the HVAC and Plumbing market, including contractors, consulting engineers, and owners. The goal is to promote B&I Contractors’ services and solutions to support contract customers, work with consulting engineers on default specifications, and act as a trusted advisor with account owners. Working with the Director of Preconstruction and other internal groups, the Senior Mechanical Estimator will ensure retention of assigned accounts and customers to maximize profit generation from accounts through influence on specifications and project scopes, achieve quarterly quotas and annual sales goals, and close sales on a monthly basis.

Duties
  • Assist Director of Preconstruction and estimating group to select projects to bid.
  • Interpret specifications, blueprints and addendums.
  • Prepare and communicate requests for information to clarify project scope during estimating process.
  • Evaluate most efficient methods of installation and material usage to minimize projected costs/bids.
  • Use agreed upon estimating software to create bids.
  • Prepare competitive bids (bid forms, budgets, etc.) to meet the project’s needs.
  • Make notes or clarifications on Contract/field drawing to assist Plumbing & HVAC Estimators, Superintendent and foreman with installation.
  • Review with Plumbing and HVAC Superintendents the job estimate and takeoff as to when to mobilize project, material and manpower requirements.
  • Prepare Fixture Package purchase orders and subcontracts after scoping out/negotiating with the different parties for the best pricing.
  • Prepare purchase orders / subcontracts for work associated with fuel systems, med‑gas piping and controls, HVAC equipment, T&B, HVAC controls, and insulation.
  • Conduct and/or attend turnover meetings for contracted projects and provide budgetary information and defined scope to operations group.
  • Coordinate with Drafting Department when CAD/Shop Drawings are needed, to help avoid conflicts with other in‑house trades.
  • Attend monthly department meetings if requested.
  • Attend Pre‑bid meetings as requested.
  • Attend weekly Estimating meeting.
  • Attend Closeout meetings to review outcome of projects and compare estimate to actual costs.
  • Along with Director of Preconstruction explores new areas to expand Department revenue.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with potential clients and designers.
  • Attend professional organization meetings and similar activities to promote business for B&I.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings and sketches.
  • Full knowledge and understanding of all Plumbing & HVAC products, equipment and installation procedures.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Five (5) years previous Commercial HVAC and Plumbing Estimating experience.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.
